Today my giant asian female died.:(

  1. People say a praying mantis cant have human emotions,

    Maybe,

    Maybe that's true.

But how do we define emotion?,

the hate that wars bring out in people.
The separation that this election caused?,
the fact that a lot of people care about themselves?
    That were divided?
    The lies,
    the hate?
I can see more emotion in Hope and Bugsey then most humans.
Maybe its us that doesn't know how to show emotion.
    Just because one cant talk,
doesn't mean their words are unheard.

  3. I found information online that further explains molts. Here's what was stated:

L1 = Develops inside the egg

    L1/H = Hatches

M1/L2 = Has 1st Molt, is at Larval Stage 2

M2/L3 = Has 2nd Molt, is at Larval Stage 3

M3/L4 = Has 3rd Molt, is at Larval Stage 4

M4/L5 = Has 4th Molt, is at Larval Stage 5

M5/L6 = Has 5th Molt, is at Larval Stage 6

M6/L7 = Has 6th Molt, is at Larval Stage 7

M7/L8/Immature Adult = Has 7th Molt, is at Larval Stage 8, is Sexually Immature

Mature Adult = Is Fully Grown, is Sexually Mature

So I was right about most of it, such as when they first hatch they are at L1. The only thing I didn't know of is that going from an immature adult to a mature adult counts as a life stage, so my Tenodera sinensis' and Angustipennis' had 9 life stages rather than 8, but have molted the same amount of times as I predicted.

So, Zeep will be at M7/L8, an Immature Adult, once he molts for this last time. Then in about 3 weeks he'll be a Fully Grown, Mature Adult.

Unfortunately, the Immature Adult female I had, Curious Georgina, mis-molted and is now deceased. So he doesn't have another Sinensis to mate with. Though, I have a Mature Adult female Angustipennis which he could possibly breed with. Would they be compatible, and would the female lay a fertile ootheca afterward? Would it look like a Sinensis ootheca or an Angustipennis ootheca? Would it look like a combination of both? I imagine it is definitely a possibility that it would work out, as they are of the same genus. Though, it would be important that I kept the nymphs and did not release them into the wild as this is actually illegal. I would literally be the creator of a new species and if released, they think it may cause problems. I would think that unlikely but I will follow the rules none-the-less and refrain from releasing any nymphs into the wild. Or selling them. I wonder what I would name the species? Let's first take the species' names and figure out their definitions. "Sinensis" means "native to China" in Latin and "Angustipennis" means "having a narrow wing". So let me find the latin word for... "hybrid". Which is "hybrida". If it truly worked, that's what I would name the species. Tenodera hybrida.

  4. This is a rather ridiculously belated blog post, but oh well. I ended up ordering another mantis, this time a ghost because I've heard so much about them on the forum and they had really started to grow on me. So I got this tiny little thing in the mail on Friday, May 3rd. (I'd forgotten how small they started out!) The nymph was pretty clearly a girl by the shape of her prothorax (like an arrowhead) and my sister named her Lenie, after another book character who's about as twisted mentally as this my little girl looks! She molted to L3 the following Wednesday (5/8) and just molted to L4 last Tuesday (5/21) with no problems. She'll eat pretty much whatever I give her (except for mealworms). Lenie is extremely fast and I can be a nervous wreck trying to hold her because she moves and jumps so quick!

Siri's new theme song has been Petty's "Learning to Fly": he scared the heck out of me last Monday (5/20) when we were calmly watching TV and Siri decided he wanted to test drive his new wings. So now he gets to come out only in the bathroom after I've Siri-proofed it. Last night he was doing a lot of flying, and when I asked on the forum, it appears he's looking for ladies. He's also dieting too, I guess, because he's been a lot more active and less inclined to wolf everything down. (He only eats his favorite part sometimes... the head.)

Can't remember if I posted about this or not (don't think so) but I got Siri a new home in a Kritter Keeper with Malaysian drift and faux plants. I really like the setu-up so I am planning one (albeit smaller) for Lenie too.

So...I've been kinda busy lately with schoolwork and stuff, so I haven't had time to spend with my pets to train them for handling. One of my gator lizards is way too big and aggressive to start "taming" now, but the other one is still very young and easier to handle. I haven't handled my pacman for forever, about 4 months, and he seems like he's reverting to his aggressive defense behavior when I try to handle him. Oh well...I (kinda) have time. :)

Not much else to post...I just downloaded "Ride the Lightning" to my Mp3 player and listened to it like a million times...I am going to play guitar with my friend david at a dance class tonight, which I do every wednesday...I guess there's not much for me to post now. Bye for now. :D

  5. As of Dec. 2006 I have been here for 6 years ! Is that a long time or what!

  6. Those of you eyeing a Retina Display MacBook Pro can now pick up one online with virtually no delay.

The laptops are now officially designated "in stock" at Apple's online store. So you can order one and receive it within five business days via standard free shipping or within two to three business days via $15 expedited shipping.

The Retina Display laptop has teased consumers with a variety of wait times since its debut in June.

Apple initially promised a delay of two to three weeks following the launch of the new MacBook Pro. That quickly rose to a month before inching back to three to four weeks and then settling back in at two to three weeks. The wait time eased further in late July to one to weeks.

The new MacBook Pro is in stock at Apple's U.S. online store as well as in stores abroad, including the U.K. and Japan. Consumers can order the unit online and have it delivered either to their doorstep or to their local Apple retail outlet.

The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro starts at $2,199 for the 2.3GHz version and $2,799 for the 2.6GHz edition.

My T. sinensis old gal died last week, and her ooth hatched less than a week later (Saturday) - surprise! I wasn't even sure it was fertile. So, we have a pile of Chinese babies running around. Before I knew THAT was going on, I'd orderd 2 Gambian nymphs, 5 ghost nymphs, 2 gemmatus nymphs, and 3 H. majuscula.

I never do anything "a little bit," according to my husband, who was not worried about the money I'd spent but more 1) Where are we going to put all of them and 2) Why didn't I get the species he wanted? LOL

All the gory details (plus pics and vid) are on my regular bugblog at http://mantisfiles.weebly.com

  7. so today it warmed up by me so the blue bottle flys where sunning themselves. I must have captured twelve so far and I'm still catching, mabe now I can get a colony started. Does anyone have pointers?

W00t! My B. mendica, Zorak, molted to adult last night. Awesome. I'll post pics when my camera charges and he has had a chance to chill. If anyone has an adult female, please let me know! He is single and almost ready to mingle!

Also, my Idolo molted yesterday for the third time since I've had her with no problems. She always molts at 10:30/11am. Girl's on a schedule! I'm not sure what she is now.. L6 maybe. Again, pics to come. She doesn't like to be bothered for a good day or two. And she's scary when she's bothered, like a big angry alien running at your face.. omg.

I have given one adult Polyspilota aeruginosa and my L5 Popa spurca to a friend interested in the hobby. I really hope they do well for her. They're both pretty easy, and she's very responsible with pets but she has a good many pets. So now I'm down to 4 from 6 and awaiting a Theopompa ooth, which will be a great challenge. I'm preparing many little nymph homes, collecting bark and stuff outside, and figuring out what kind of food to find besides the usual, which is less easy once Wisconsin gets cold. I'm told firebrats are a good choice. I don't even know what those are much less where to find them. The research continues (with many dead ends). Sometimes I wonder if they can't adapt to our altitude. Thoughts? Experiences? These just may be impossible to keep in captivity, but it's worth trying. I've been lucky with what I've kept so far.

Today I tried to pair my Disabled Ghost Mantis with my oldest female. I put her into his cage and within moments he had jumped onto her back. The only issue is that he was facing the wrong way! She doesn't seem to bothered that he is on her back but he just doesn't want to get the job done it would seem. Hes spent most of the time the wrong way around and I haven't seen him attempting to connect though. This pairing was always going to be an iffy one for me.As he is disabled I'm not sure whether heck do any good but hey its worth a shot!.

Whilst my Ghosties were busy playing House I decided it was time to pair my Marbleds.I chose the oldest female who is looking nice and plump and put her with the male. The male was definitely interested and tried to jump on her back but after a few attempts she was definitely not in the mood! Whilst I was safely removing the female I noticed that my younger female was calling. I whipped her out and after shed settled down she was introduced to the male. No pairing as yet but he is slowly sneaking up behind her as i type this so hopefully well get lucky here.

  8. First off the black eyed peas of the pseudoharpax broke up when a "male" molted to L5 and turned out to be a female

    so I have 2 males, 2 females

1 pair of them is subadult now

i also want to say that since i now am in high school, i may be too busy in a year or two to rear mantises

i may take a break from the hobby for a few years starting in a year or so

    not sure yet

    also, Lady GaGa is awesome!

I'm hoping my popa spurca molt soon

i have an L6 pair, they are really cool

  9. Yesterday I was on the computer and found a great find! :P You can get a mantis cage that has netting it was called a mantis pagoda. You get it in a box and there is a coupon inside that you send to the makers of the item and you get a mantis ootheca and if you want food as well in the mail 1-2 weeks later :o:D It was $20. Too bad for me it was only in America and you can't get it in Australia

PHOENIX – Thousands more people evacuated their homes in southern Arizona Sunday as crews battling a wildfire faced extremely high winds that drove flames across roads and containment lines and toward populated areas.

The Monument fire was one of several raging in the Arizona and New Mexico where forecasters say fire crews would likely have little relief from the hot, windy weather that has dogged them for days.

About 3,000 people from 1,700 homes were evacuated south of the city of Sierra Vista where the blaze has been burning for a week but picked up speed Sunday as winds gusted up to 60 mph, Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said late Sunday night.

The flames raced down a mountain and into a heavily populated area, forcing crews to abandon their lines and set up in new spots.

"Winds pushed fire across Highway 92, making run so fast and so hot that the danger to citizens in the path was significant," she told The Associated Press. "The fire crews are doing an amazing job, trying to get in front of it."

Sunday's evacuations brought the total number to about 10,000 people from 4,300 homes forced to flee the flames, she said.

Some residences were destroyed Sunday, adding to the 44 already reported, but fire officials still don't have an exact number, Capas said. There have been no serious injuries.

Winds had diminished by late Sunday and were projected to reach just 10 mph Monday.

"It that prediction holds, it will be a big benefit for firefighters," she said.

Before the winds spread the flames earlier in the day, the blaze was reported 27 percent contained at about 21,000 acres or nearly 33 square miles.

Meanwhile, the massive Wallow fire that has been burning in eastern Arizona for three weeks kept about 200 residents of Luna, N.M., under an evacuation order for a second day.

A containment line that had held through days of high winds was breached Saturday and the fire raced toward town before shifting winds steered it around the community. It was moving to the north into an area of scattered ranches late Sunday afternoon, fire information officer Michael Puentes said.

Despite the evacuation order for Luna, about half the town's residents remained in town. They have been told to stay off the roads so they don't get in the way of fire crews, Catron County Undersheriff Ian Fletcher said. Few people went to a Red Cross shelter set up in Reserve, N.M.

"If the fire comes back around or things change where they have to get out, we still have an egress point, so we will still escort them out of town," Fletcher said. "We're expecting high winds this afternoon — we're preparing for the worst and hoping for the best."

The Wallow fire, which is burning up much of Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, is the largest of several wildfires burning in spots across the southwestern United States.

Evacuation orders for Luna came on the same day that some other residents displaced by the fire that began May 29 were allowed to return home.

The Wallow blaze has consumed nearly 800 square miles, a little more than 511,000 acres, and more than 3,500 firefighters were trying to stop its advance. It is larger than a 2002 fire that burned 732 square miles and destroyed 491 buildings that had been the largest in state history. Despite its size, the latest fire has destroyed just 32 homes and four rental cabins. Containment rose to 44 percent Sunday.

Residents of Alpine, Ariz., were allowed to return to their homes Saturday morning after being forced out for more than two weeks, while residents of the resort town of Greer will be allowed to return home late Monday morning.

  10. Patch 4.2 Public Test Realm [updated 5/13]

Devouring Plague damage done has been decreased by 12%.

Mind Blast damage wow gold done has been increased by 12%.

Shadow Word: Death damage done has been increased by 12%.

Shadow Word: Pain damage done has been decreased by 12%.

Mind Flay damage done has been increased by 12%.

Vampiric Touch damage done has been decreased by 12%.

    source

The above patch notes, which detail a 12%, across-the-board cut to DOTs (and an accompanying 12% across-the-board buff to direct damage spells), represents the first major change for shadow priests to come out of the PTR. But what exactly does the change mean, and why was it done? Are shadow priests going to lag behind in patch 4.2? Are shadow priests being pushed away from a DOT-heavy model and toward something else?

    Why u nerf us Blizz??? :( :(

No one ever likes seeing a spell get nerfed, even if it comes with an accompanying buff. It's even uglier when the nerf is to an entire class of spells, as is the case with our DOTs.

    Tier 12 stat mix www.game4world.de

When comparing our current Wind Dancer gear with the upcoming Dark Phoenix raid set, two of our previously blue sockets are converting to red sockets, so we'll be able to match most of our socket bonuses. The new stat mix is actually identical, with heavy doses of haste and crit, an average serving of hit, and garnished with a bit of expertise and mastery. The balance has been redistributed, though, as many of the stats have shifted to new slot locations.

I never like to see this much crit on our gear, but at least we can still reforge out of it. In Wrath, we were just stuck with whatever stats the item design team decided on. Reforging isn't a perfect solution, but if it helps us mitigate all this crit we're getting, then I'll take it. The reason we see so much crit is wow gold kaufen it's equally valued for both specs (as opposed to something like expertise, which is awful for some but great for others). There are also several offset pieces that look to have better stat mixes, although our set bonuses may very well force us into using our tier gear.

  11. The biggest flaw of this story ...Walt Disneys 164 DVD is making a cry from 45 years old man and a child every time I'm seeing. My opinions on Disney movies vary - some are good, some are almost unwatchable - but "Beauty and the Beast" is the best work has been carried out the study.Because I love this movie so much? I think it's the music. In some musicals (animated or live), when the song starts, the story has stopped. (Can anyone remember a tune from "Mulan"?) But in this film, music, Ashman and Menken advances the story brilliantly. Animation and the narrator combine nearly flawless performance, and the use of computer animation, ballroom transformed into a pioneering course. As added features, the song added: "Human Again" is a wonderful fun number. I can understand why it was removed from the original version, but its inclusion does not really affect the story (which is another big production number and no "Be Our Guest", so essential to the plot but it helps to know the secondary characters .)Walt Disneys 164 DVD The "making of" features are very interesting games on disc that I can take or leave. But the film itself is still the stone, worth the purchase price by itself, the standard by which all other Disney movies are measured.

Okay, this is REALLY cool. On Saturday the 14th, me and my family were shopping at the mall for my dad's birthday, and we started to notice these corvettes everywhere. So me and my brother get really excited, and pretty soon we come across this awesome 1964 Corvette Stingray. And even cooler, it was for sale for $32,000. Of course we didn't get it, but this thing was the coolest corvette I've ever seen. We didn't have the camera, so I can't post any pictures of it (Yet!). Because we could go back. They also had a '73 Stingray, a 2003 racing Corvette, and a red 2010 coupe for sale for $51,000. Best trip to the mall ever!

I recently recieved seven ghost ooths in the mail a few days ago. Setting up their little nurseries took forever because someone decided to spill my brush-on super glue the day before I wanted to use it. Some of the ooths were attached to sticks so I just tied them with twisties to the enclosure. I ended up buying some more super glue to attach the other ooths. I glued the ooths to a piece of cardboard which i then glued to the lids.

The temperature has been cold here lately and is probably not so favorable for growing ghost ooths here, but I could not pass on the opportunity for cheap ooths. I have been misting them and shooting warm air from my portable heater into their enclosure to get their ideal conditions for at least part of the day.

With any ooth, it takes great patience waiting for them to hatch.... I want them out NOW!!

    Cheers,

    Mr. Mantid

  12. I very much apologize for my abrupt and continued absence from the forum these past months without notice or a word before now. It was necessary to take a break from Mantidforum and from my mantis hobby due to some extreme family issues, and I've just now logged in for the first time since March of this year (as I'm sure you who are interested have seen that I've been absent).

A sincere thank you to those who have contacted (or tried to contact me) to see if all was OK. I'm still having ongoing issues with my family life; but I am taking my son and myself to counseling and trying to move forward in a positive direction. I've been so consumed these past months with these family problems (and also work for a large portion of that time) that I could barely deal with all on my plate, let alone the forum or my mantis hobby. My son is the most important thing in my life, and I could not let my focus be anywhere else. I'm laid off right now, so at least I'm not quite as stressed. I'm hoping now to be able to pop in from time to time.

The last of my mantids, an L4/5 female Rhombodera sp., died at the end of October. It's been strange being completely mantidless now. And I miss them. I know I will not stay away from them forever; but for now I must content myself to visit the forum occasionally and work on resolving more important issues in my life.

I've made and enjoyed so many wonderful friendships here. I want you all to know I do not take that for granted. Again, I sincerely apologize for not explaining my absence until now. Take care and best wishes to you, my friends, and your families in the new year. :) Though not in my former position of mantis keeping, I'm still here and will be around....;)
