What is (Johansson, 1763)? Stagmomantis carolina (Johansson, 1763). Plant said it is the type species. I have read that it was when the species was discovered.

When a species is first described, after it is discovered to be new to science, the last name of the author of that original description is listed after the given species name of the organism. In this case, "(Johansson, 1763)" denotes that the author Johansson first described the species of "carolina" in the year 1763. This particular authorship is in parentheses, which denotes that Johansson did not originally place the species "carolina" within its current genus of Stagmomantis. Johansson originally placed carolina in the Gryllus genus. So when a species is moved into a more appropriate genus due to subsequent taxonomy revision, the original author remains the same but his name is placed in parentheses to indicate the change.
To confuse matters even more in the case of this species, Johansson is regarded by many authorities to be merely the student of Linne and the name "carolina" was originally described and proposed by Linne (Johansson's professor/teacher) and merely just defended in a thesis by Johansson. Linne subsequently published the name himself in a separate work a short time later. Thus, in this individual case, Linne is considered to be the true author of this species and the proper name should be listed as: Stagmomantis carolina (Linné, 1763)
