Found my old double shield on the bottom of her cage this morning. I thought she was dead at first but now she's trying to climb the cage screen without much luck. Do I let her die naturally possibly suffering or do I put her to bed in the cryo chamber? Apparently I'm quick to do the latter. What would you do?

It depends on what kind of shape she is in. If she is basically ok other than losing her feet and not being able to climb, I lay my elders on a blanket I made for such an occasion. They are happy on it, as long as she is happy to keep eating and are interested in whats going on around them and no infections, I let them die naturally.

This is one of my girls lounging on her blanket enjoying the room service I provide on demand.

She kicked not long after i posted this. Shes now in cryo until the ground is soft enough to dig a grave. Thanks for the advice ; )

Oh and she had all her legs and parts so im guessing old age. Ive had her 8 monthe plus and she was L4 when i got her

maybe old age, but its aad when anyone loses an old girl, to remember all they have been through, but got my next batch of double shields, with a mix of genders :p

Sorry to hear she died, but sounds like it was quick. It is very uncommon (perhaps even rare) for them to loose body parts, but with so many kept by all the members here it seems like more. I would agree it was old age then, typically they age 4 to 6 months until adulthood and another 3 to 8 months as adults - so it sounds like she had a long full life.

I have done this with my elders as well. I simply place them on a towel to rest. They don't ever move anywhere and they can be easily fed. I did this with my Shield mantis and she is over a year old and has been on the towel for 3 months now. She is slowly dying though.

Sorry for your loss... we do tend to get attached to these little buggers!
