8 kids came throught this here shizzy. In typical Chris fashion, I gutloaded them up with orange crush, chocolate, candy, and ice cream. I shook em up, then sent them home. 👊🤣

The frills on their backs. If theyre wide, with fringy margin along the sides are female. Less wide and not so much of a fringy margin along the sides are male.

Wide crowns with maybe one kink are females. Narrower crowns with a more pronounced kink and/or maybe two kinks are male.

  3. Nice to see pupae from a 'new cup' eclosing. To me, this means my process is becoming more reliable. If so, I should see it pop strong this weekend sometime.

Holy!   Boom is an understatement. If this keeps up, ill have a good hundred or more by days end. Ill be sure to stagger the pupae from my next cups.

Good thing I can refrigerate flies. Most of my mantises are FULL.

  4. If everything goes well, ill have two sexed pairs of i4/i5 orchids next week.

:D @hysteresis  it's an amazing show, I actually read all 5 books before/during the beginning of the show and was obsessed with it through college, have multiple shirts myself and even...my college dorm door was covered:

  7. My spikes are hitting 4 to 5 weeks, and ill be tapping into the last 250 of 1000. This weekend. I figure I have fed at least 300 spikes by hand (not really by hand  as with most, I just laid spikes out and the mantises just pluck them up).

I figure ive mismanaged about 250 spikes experimenting. Oh well. Theyd have died as prey anyway. LoL.

I have about 250 in process currently. So far, pupates are eclosing in 1 to 2 weeks at room temperature. Light misting is a must for me here or they just dry out.

Hopefully the last batch still produces. I took the last cup out for warmth and air, and theyre still wiggling with vigor.

Should I feed these spikes some mush, or pupate them all at once? Or keep batching them out in cups?

  8. Flies..... Flies everywhere....

    😎👍

  9. Ahhhh. Remember Lola Religiosa?

I'll be taking her ooth out of diapause soon. Hopefully it turns out to be fertile. Even if just a few nymphs drop, my heart will soar!

Buncha lil' Lolas scurrying after springtails and melanogasters in a deli cup?! 😍

  14. I MEANT TO POST THIS BEFORE BUT DIDN'T SEND IT.

UPDATE: I've found that keeping the pupae a bit humid helps them out. I've had four BBF eclose since yesterday.

First time since getting the spikes. It's be weird. If things go right with light mistings, I expect flies.

I also have a test set where pupae will sit in a pinch of coco soil to retain a bit of moisture. Kevin from Moonlight Mantids made a video where his pupae are clearly seen sitting in some grain or whatever. He lightly mists them until they eclose.

Two weeks and only 2 BBF, both gimps. 😏

Someone else in Mantis Keepers on FB said their rainbowmealworms BBF spikes were easy to pupate but long to eclose. Took hers two weeks. Mine just hit two weeks.

    Do these look bad?

      MantisGirl13

Interesting! There is no real way to tell if your pupae are bad other than just waiting, although you could try candling a few.

      - MantisGirl13

    2. hysteresis

      hysteresis

The pupae are dark. Something inside.

Im getting 3 or 4 per day from my 2ndish batch.

Zero from the first which has to be ~3 wks since pupation.

I think they need more moisture than initially provided during and  right after pupation. Seems a moistened cotton pad not in contact with, helps. It must be too dry for them to eclose properly.

Kevin Young / Moonlight posted a BBF care video where his pupa are in some sort of grain media he lightly oversprays.

My middle batch / moistened is producing a few.

I have new batches that are pupating slightly warmed and a bit humid. Hopefully those pop.

  15. Baking twigs for my gongy's mesh cube. Im sure he'll love all the room.

I dont think it is, seeing its in a dry environment. I did, and oils rose to the surface. Think I'll hit it with soapy water to cut the oils, rinse it well, and let it dry. Should be fine in a mesh cube.
