I'm a little confused with what the scientific name is. My giant asian golden mantis was sold as Hierodula sp. golden, but I've seen the (I assume) same species being referred to as H. venosa. Is one correct, or are they different species?

It is indeed H.venosa. I learned that later. I didn't knew that when I  bought mine. She was verocious with eating.😁 She grabbed even prey bigger than herself.

There is another golden species, Hierodula java. For both, I believe it is only older females that can be golden/yellow.

The original Hierodula sp. (golden) in the hobby was H venosa but since, several other (yellow) Hierodula sp have been introduced to the hobby under the same common name.
Thanks for the clarification!
