Yay!

Okay...I found my crappy 4 mega pixel camera and usb cord...uploaded to computer...figured this whole saving thing out...now I have to figure out how to post these here. Umm...I'm making this up as I go along, so...let's see, I'm gonna hit this add image button and hope the whole computer doesn't fizz out on me...ah shoot, hit the add link button okay, here goes again...now it doesn't do anything. Oh, I see, add scripted java request or something and hit the button again! Okay, now I have to en

Workspace

Thought I'd show everyone my work area. This is my mister The cages... This is the whole desk. The fruitflys are in the corner as well as some of yen's dusters. The sticky notes (it's more than candy ) are there to be used as trackers for molts. I also have some bamboo skewers and portion cups for tranferring the nymphs around. What I do to get them out when I clean their cages is: 1. Transfer them out of the cage with the bamboo skewers. 2. Stick them into the portion cup. 3. Turn

Working On It...A little bit...

I'm gonna actually start adding stuff to my blog now and then, perhaps regularily. I've been out of the mantis hobby for about half a year now. All my stock finished their lifespan early winter to early spring. I've just now started to restock. On that note, I have bought some nymphs from Rebecca (mantisplace) a widearm, shield, and several africans (centralis sp.). Not much to start out with, I really did want some more marbled mantids, but once I raise and breed these guys I can get some rarer

Wild Caught

Found 3 adult female Tenodera sp. (Chinese) hanging around outside. Took them in, 2 laid oothecas, then I let them all go a week later. One ootheca looks fertile, the other does not...I'll probably place them outside in my plants so I can see some more next year. Unfortunately ( ) I can't find my camera so I can take some magnificent macro shots for you all to stare and drool over. So sorry

Widearm Mantis

24/7/08 Recieved two Widearm mantids. Both are L1/L2. ----- 30/7/08 One Widearm molted to L2/L3 and the other has died for unknown reasons. ----- 8/8/08 Shield mantis has molted to L3/L4 ----- 24/8/08 Widearm has molted to L4/L5 ----- 14/9/08 Haven't updated in a long time. The remaining Widearm is now L4/L5. It's been 20 days since it's last molt and I have no idea why it is growing so slowly this molt. ----- 21/9/08 Widearm molted to L5/L6...finally...

Widearm death

Dang it...my only widearm died molting to adulthood last night...no idea why. Oh well, life comes and goes. Makes me glad I don't get overly attached to these things. Still, woulda been nice to have some widearm babies On a brighter note, I also received my camera today, so expect some pics when I get back tomorrow

Wide Arms and Shields

I got my Wide Arms and Shields today. 2 L2? Wide Arms and 5 L1 & L2 Shields. Needless to say, there won't be any pics of these guys just yet, waaay to small for my camera. They are set up all in the cages shown in previous posts. I wanted to try to be organized this time so I would know what mantids I actually have . I'm going to attempt to log these guys. So...today is the...gotta get up and check the calendar...the 24th of July. So, let's make a nice little list: July 24th, 2008 Mantids

Update 2

Another update, basically. Have the details (2) posts below. Not much has changed excepting a higher temperature and the L4s are eating houseflies. Shows you what can happen in 10 days . I think I'll add a new post every once and then, just so people know that I'm actually updating (you can't see edit dates) August 3, 2008 Mantids: 1 Wide Arm-L4 4 Shields-L3/L4 Housing: 24 ounce containers with cloth lids. A (non organic) stick and some excelsior in each. A foam bottom to retain humid

Some new pics

Admittedly, not too good, but I'm happy enough with them to post. It's just almost impossible to focus I really only like the first one. I have found that it will be necessary for me to obtain a tripod

Shield mantis pic.

This is my L5/L6 Shield mantis. If someone could make a guess as to the actual instar? I'm not sure about it. Some crappy pics taken with a crappy camera, so glad I'm getting a new one soon And a little photo I took outside, just to give you an idea of what the weather is like in Virginia

Roaches

Well, I plunged into the deep end last week and went ahead and ordered some Lobster roaches (no idea of latin name) and plan to breed them so I'm not always buying flies. I'll update when they arrive. ...and it's Nov. 4 with no responses, no processing, and no roaches...*sigh* ...ordered it from the doubleeds website instead. Hopefully that will come through. ...and it did! Got my 200 roaches, am keeping them in a 20 gallon container (or something close to that) with and infrared light to ke

O.K. I've finally got it!

I looked at Sparky's guide again, made myself an account, sat through minutes of uploading, and I think I'm finally ready to post my first picture! Here goes- These are some of my supplies, bought almost entirely off mantisplace Did I do it? Yes I did!!!!! Wahoooooooooooooo!! Finally! More supplies from mantisplace. If you're wondering about the ties, its because the cages are all in my room Here's my make do aquarium. I never was able to do the good glasscutting that some of you in th

More mantids

Been a while since I've updated and a little bit has changed. First off, a somewhat embarrassing discovery, it turns out that it appears as the nymphs have grown, the species have changed on me I had a couple deaths due to late food arrival and have 4 mantids left. 1 adult female shield mantis 1 presub (?) male widearm. 1 presub female african 1 prepresub female african They're doing fine now, being fed exclusively on lobster roaches. Unfortunately the die offs from lack of food mean I ne

Lets Liven Up

Yeah. I'm glad to be back after all this time, glad to see that everyone still exists. Glad to see Rick still hasn't found his sense of humor. Glad that hibiscusmile is still 'jolly'. Sad that yen left. But other than that... I have one complaint. This forum seems kind of dead compared to when I left it. Maybe it's just me, but I see no life here. If I didn't know better, I'd guess this whole forum was made up of robots. What's the fun in that? And where is everybody? It's like a graveyard he

Housefly stuff

Seeing as my mantids are all eating houseflies now, I looked around the forum for ideas on new ways to keep them. I bought these containers from mantisplace to help with escapees and convenience. I hatch the pupae in there and the flies start moving around in the bigger part of the container. I then put them in applesauce jars, or into a 2 liter soda bottle, with some apple in the bottom. When they've been fed for a couple days with apple, I move them into a milk jug, (completly and sham

Hatching

Y'know those Chinese mantids I caught last summer? Well it appears as though at least one of their oothecae is fertile. Came out of the shower to find them hatching...I actually didn't really want too many of them to hatch...but right now it doesn't look like there are gonna be more than 20 ( I intentionally didn't spray ). Gotta run up to the store to get some fruitflies I guess. My goal is to get 1/10th of whatever hatches to at least L5. From L5 on this species is more stable in their molting

Crickets

My new cricket breeder containers, I do buy the crickets from pet co and am currently 'flushing' out their systems with some greens and *gasp* carrots. The bug boxes they come in actually are quite nice for the crickets. The cage is a 12 gallon container with holes cut in the side and covered with mesh. The bottom is covered with oatmeal, and there are 4 sponges inside for the crickets to drink out of. The plastic container is turned on its side and contains food for the crickets. There is no pl
