Can a Mantid eat a Honey Bee(stinger and all) w/o being harmed?

Thanks for the heads up. I used a few bees in the past out of ignorance as feeders when i was new to the "hobby" of keeping Mantids. I stopped when I heard of their dwindling numbers. The only reason I fed her this honey bee was because one was unlucky enough to end up in my house. Unfortunetly...

Can a Mantid eat a Honey Bee(stinger and all) w/o being harmed?

I used to mainly feed my Mantids crickets & the occasional spider or moth. I haven't kept Mantids for a couple years now, but when I had them before I had only fed them 1 or 2 bees. From what I remember, the Mantis would usually start with the head and when it got to the tip of the abdomen...

    Help with Sexing!

Good News! Right after I made the post saying I will post more pics when she molted I looked over to see that she was in the process! That was my 1st time actually witnessing a molt from begining to end. If this one ends up being female that will mean that I actually have 2 females and 3 males...

    L3 Male or Female?

I will definetly put up more pics at the next molt. All of them molted last night, except for the only one that Im curious about! But I think that since they all most likely came from the same ooth, that the hopefull female should molt in the next couple days. Thanks again to all of you for your...

    L3 Male or Female?

I knew that there was something different when comparing the two mantids but I couldnt quite put my finger on it. Your link showed me what it was. I wish there were more detailed pics with labeling of body parts like the one you put up. I have seached the web looking for details about the sexual...

    L3 Male or Female?

The 6th segment line of this E. Macrops is rough and unstraight. The 6th segment lines on the males I have are straight lines and segments seem a little smaller. I can count 7 to 8 segments on both but they dont look the same. Here is a pic.

    Help with Sexing!

I think those photo's I posted were probably insufficient. Maybe these will help with a possible sex id. The better resolution pic is the mantis I think is female and the other pic is the mantis Im almost positive is a male. http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv96/ca...84/IMG_0735.jpg

    Help with Sexing!

Thanks for the input Kamakiri! It was extremely helpfull! I didnt know that the 7th and 8th segments combined as the mantis grows to be female. Sorry if I did this link thing in a sloppy way. Your link for that was very helpfull aswell. The 1st link is a picture of the mantis that I hope is a...

    Help with Sexing!

No, I think they are L3's or L4's. I saw some pictures you posted showing the end of the abdomen of a male and a female. The way I understood your description was that if those 2 antenae like things on the tip of the abdomen are pointing towards eachother it's a female and if they point away...

    Help with Sexing!

I have made 3 seperate orders for 2 Euchomonella Macrops, 1 male and 1 female on each order online. So far they all seem to be male to me. Im hoping that maybe there is a distinguishing feature for sexing this species. I cant find any abdomen pics of female e. macrops nymphs, I have only seen...

    Crumpled Adult Rhombodera

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry to hear you lost one also, Katnapper. It wouldn't have been as sad if it happened when it molted to L3 or something. Its just a really sad site to see the adult mantis that I had been caring for for about 6 months get mortally wounded just after leaping its final...

    Crumpled Adult Rhombodera

I left overnight for Christmas only to come home & find one of my mantids had molted, but it was just laying on its side in the corner of its cage. I tried to help it out of the corner & it was still moving in studder steps, so i figured it had just molted. I managed to get him into its...

Can a brown recluse kill a sub-adult rhombodera?

Bee stings are able to penetrate the exo-skeleton as well? Can that kill the mantis?

Can a brown recluse kill a sub-adult rhombodera?

Thanks for the advice guys! Its been about 20 hours and the mantis seems to be fine. I have heard rumors about people running into the brown recluse out here so I naturally expected the worst. I dont know much about spiders so I checked out some links and I think I was mistaken. I still wonder...

Can a brown recluse kill a sub-adult rhombodera?

I found a spider in my house earlier so I could feed it to my mantis. This spider was like 1/20th the size of the mantis so I thought there was no way its fangs could puncture the mantids exoskeleton. As soon as the mantis caught the spider it kept switching the spider from one arm to the other...

Rhombodera sp. (Malaysian Giant Shield Mantid) mating sequence

I'm maturing my 1st pair of Rhombodera's. I see that you measured the female at 100mm, but did you happen to measure the male? Did you have any trouble distinguishing between male and female pre L4? I dont know if I have 2 males or 2 females, so if you have any advice I would appreciate it.

    Molting Question?

Thanks I like mantis. To answer your smart ###### question peter, Im actually interested in learning how to spot pre-molting signs and irregularities. As for the desriptions, many people like to add text to their photos with short discriptions. Next time I will explain more clearly so you can...
