Sometimes a mantis will skip a molt or have an extra molt, so it's not a very reliable way to tell gender. Personally, I don't usually keep track of instars past L6. - MantisGirl13

In a female, the last segment will be wide and pointed. In a male, there will be two, short segments and the last one has a rounded tip. - MantisGirl13

You can use window screen or tulle fabric, both are very easy to obtain.  Take out the wire mesh and hot glue in the new mesh.  - MantisGirl13
