    They are about 2 - 2.5 cm and bulky. I don't know if Atta texana could be found in NC Rick. Will check A. texana distribution in the US. Becareful what you wish for Rebecca ;)

    Yeah it was a while ago. Have it for a generation. Nymphs hatching out in as little as 2 weeks.

    Don't be, no harm giving your thought and sharing information. Here is another method for ID certain Empusa species, although it is easier by looking at the lobe.

    Good food vs. Bad food

    Mantis will feed on any kind of insects in the wild so the only bad insects are those parasitic/pesticide infected insects. Diversify is the key. It is better to use a variety of feeder insects instead of one type of (good) insect.

    Similar to firebrats., it is a good feeder food for Eremiaphila spp (desert/pebble mantis).

    This type of variation also been spotted on our native species, adult male Litanuetria minor. Although majority have full set of wings.
