    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

Oh, I know. That was just a little joke. It's not worth the trouble to produce a periodical geared towards mantids. Not a big enough audience. I'll stick to videos and photography where I can at least make a little money.

I'll make you a deal. If you can get a publisher to back this magazine I'll supply all the photos...

    Boxer Mantis Mating Dance

She did it! The ooth is bigger than she is!

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

Not very long. Maybe an hour or less that I saw so there is a good chance I just missed it before. I hope they're all fertile because some are pretty big by Haania standards. One looks like about 12-14 nymphs. 6-8 seems to be the average. The nymphs are so tiny I have to really search for them...

Thanks everyone! Well the male molted perfectly. I didn't witness a connection until this morning and the female has already laid 4 ooths. They may be duds or it could be I just missed an earlier connection. Time will tell.

    Boxer Mantis Mating Dance

Thanks! He did connect relatively fast but the video isn't real time. I edit to keep things moving. I find that many small species connect really fast though. So I'm sorry to say the male got chomped after a few days. It's too bad. Sometimes even relatively communal females will kill a male if...

Best micro lens for my camera?

I don't know anything about Nikon so I can't make any specific recommendations, but what you're looking for is a macro lens. A true macro lens goes down to 1:1 or 1x which is actual size of the subject in comparison to the size of your camera's sensor. I have Canon gear; a 100mm lens that goes...

    Boxer Mantis Mating Dance

I have them in a 12x12 net cage with lots of branches and vines. That's a lot of space for them. She's not an aggressive female but I have flies in there every day just in case. I'm anxious to see her lay a big green ooth! It's a cool species and all I have is this one pair so it's all up to them.

Yes, the female was very receptive. I housed them together and he mounted a second time later that night. They've been living happily together since.

    Boxer Mantis Mating Dance

Hestiasula major (Giant Boxer Mantis) perform a very interesting ritual to lure a mate. When the male spots a potential partner he undulates his long thin abdomen from side to side as if to say "look how flexible I am", all the while vibrating his over sized claws. If receptive the female...

Thank you! Yes, she is tiny. Here she is on my thumb...

    Tiny creatures on mantis' mouth.

Yes, those are grain mites. In general they do no harm. Just feed off the food left over. But in the right conditions they will swarm and cause all kinds of problems. Chances are they come from either fruit fly cultures or the crickets. I often see them on crickets. But I've also seen them on...

    FOR SALE: Hierodula patellifera 4-some

SOLD So far this is a very cool species. This is my first generation and I'm very impressed by the colors; pale green, some into yellow, with stripping on upper legs, and red markings on abdomen and back. Looking forward to seeing adults. What I have to offer is 4 nymphs approximately L4-L5...

FOR SALE: Euchomenella heteroptera L4-L5 pairs

I have 2 pairs available. *** guaranteed. Species is easy to breed and communal. Just get them to adult, cage together and you will get ooths and nymphs. They are long lived as adults. The parents of these nymphs are still alive having laid 8 ooths each so far. This is a fun species that I've...

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

OK, people. Female is now adult! She molted this afternoon which is pretty funny because I predicted it would happen early this month. I didn't take any chances and allowed her to molt undisturbed. I'll get photos of the process next generation (I hope). She had been roaming around upside down...

Yay! Glad you got a camcorder. Hope you enjoy it. The 2 I've owner are also Canon Vixia so you're in good company. Now what you need to do is find out the thread size on the lens and buy an Opteka 10x Macro to add on. And if the f number is adjustable set it the highest setting.

What I said is no reservations, and that we, as a community, would prefer nymph get to those with a record of breeding success until additional cultures are established.

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

Thanks for your input! Yes, I was sure to get a detailed description of their natural environment. They do spend most of their time vertical but I also spoke to someone who was lucky enough to witness more than a few molt and they always seek a horizontal (or nearly horizontal) perch for that...

    Haania sp. (Moss Mantis)

Not yet. She's been eating like a pig. If her molts are spaced the same as the male's she will molt around the first of June.
