    Black substance on thorax

Update: It is likely that she fell since I posted the above because she's only slightly off the ground now, but I am able to get a better picture as a result. Now it looks like it may not be a substance on her so much as just her exoskeleton itself, and it includes half of her head.  As...

    Black substance on thorax

I have an adult female Chinese that was wild-caught and brought to me in October.  I don't know how long they typically live when brought inside for the winter but she's lived longer than I expected. She hasn't been eating the last few days which seemed unusual because she laid an ooth fairly...

    Exo Terra Horror Stories ?

I also use Exo Terras and also replaced the mesh.  Last year I had D. hydei in the nano tall and did have a few escapees but not many.  I did temporarily plug the fairly large gaps at the bottom corners of the door though, as that seemed like the most obvious spot they could definitely get out.

How long will a my mantis fast before molting.

She looks amazing, congrats!  I do know the feeling of knowing that a molt is coming, and anxiously checking each morning expecting to find a freshly molted mantis, only to find that nothing happened.  I did the same thing a couple months ago while waiting for one of my ghosts to molt to adult. ...

1 month keeping Mantids - Already have an Ootheca!

Welcome!  It looks good as long as the nymphs have enough vertical space, as CosbyArt mentioned.  My only thought is that you might consider adding mesh to the lids so that they have something easier to grip while molting, if they don't choose to use the stick.

    First Adult

Yeah looks female.  I find it helps make the abdomen sections easier to see and count if I shine a flashlight on the abdomen so that it creates shadows on the ridges between the abdomen sections.  It just makes each segment more defined.  Hope it helps!

    New project on way!

I know it's hard to be patient and wait until after traveling to buy them; I had to do the same thing recently.  :)   I waited a few months to buy my next mantids, until after all my traveling was done for the next while.  Good luck and have fun with your new mantises!

@DefyTheNorms Haha an even bigger surprise, ironically!

    First Adult

Congrats on the new adult!  I had a similar experience with my first ghost to reach adulthood.  I wasn't expecting her to molt as soon as she did, and I was definitely not expecting her to have wings!  As it turns out, I had put them all at an instar behind what they actually were.  Very...

    Dragon Mantis article

Great article, thanks for sharing.  The article about dragonflies was also fascinating.  I didn't know a lot of that stuff about dragonflies!

    Hello!

Welcome!  As CosbyArt said, you can't really get away with avoiding a fruit fly culture if that's what you're feeding, even if the numbers that come out of the culture are way overkill.  You just have to use what you need and let the rest complete their life cycle. Good luck with your new ghost...

They look beautiful, congrats on the molts!  It's too bad about the wings but at least he is healthy. :)
