    Do you name your mantises?

I name mine, but I'm sure that if I were hatching ooths or breeding, I wouldn't bother to name them all.  I only keep a handful at a time though so that I can focus more on each one and give them names.

    rant's photos

Hah cool picture!  The size change is crazy, and when they're all growing up together you often don't realize just how much they've grown without a comparison like that.

Can females of these species fly?

That is a great story haha, thanks for sharing.  It's really too bad you couldn't get her!

    One year today! :D

Congrats!  I started about the same time as you, and I'm glad I found this hobby!

    Hour 7 of molting

So sorry that happened.  I once had a Chinese mantis get stuck in a similar way when molting to adult and I had to put her down.  Even if you could get the legs out, the bend in the body could cause internal problems too.  Sorry for your loss.

    Care of blue bottle pupae?

That is strange, unless they are old as CosbyArt mentioned.  I've never had issues getting blue bottles to hatch, whereas I have with house flies.  I did have some blue bottles that took a full 4-5 days to hatch this winter once, but they did still hatch.

    Ooth is hatching!

Hurray, congrats!  Enjoy caring for them; they grow up so fast! ;)

    Black substance on thorax

If they do have an adapted shorter lifespan to make sure they get their full life cycle in before winter, that is pretty interesting, especially since cooler temperatures typically slow down their growth and prolong their lives, within reason.  But it would make sense that their lifespan adjusts...

    Idolomantis/Metallyticus/Eremiaphila/etc.

Sorry to hear that your Idolo is getting up there in age, but she does still look amazing! Your R. megaeras are very pretty too, and it's kinda cool that you got a dwarf. The Eremiaphila have the cutest faces, although I know the fake "pupils" may have a hand in that in the pictures. Thanks...

    Black substance on thorax

I am actually very close to Mount Pleasant, good choice!  That sounds about right too, so yeah they do have quite the short life here.

    Black substance on thorax

Good to know.  I think our winter weather starts a little earlier here, and I read somewhere that ooths start hatching in Michigan in late May to early June.  I'm in mid-Michigan so I am expecting something around that time this spring.  As you said, it is a short life!

    Hello!

Welcome!  I've also been caring for mantids for about a year now, having started just after Christmas last year.

    Black substance on thorax

Thanks for the thorough reply @CosbyArt.  Yeah, if it was vomit, it was definitely not normal vomit.  I did watch her poop once yesterday and it was also black.  Not sure if that is considered part of the normal range of colors. Anyway, I pulled her out this morning and offered water and honey...

    Black substance on thorax

I don't see any unusual dark marks in the enclosure anywhere, and I don't notice any smell either.  Is it possible that she vomited while hanging at such an angle that it would end up dripping over her head and down her back?  And that she somehow cleaned it all off her mouth?  I'm not sure what...
