Congratulations on the adult molt! Beautiful Chinese and orchids.  Glad you decided to take the risk and everything worked out. The male made it to adulthood, congratulations! Are you going to breed the orchids?

It’s possible she could’ve been attacked by either the cricket or grasshopper, or she could’ve succumbed to something else overnight and was promptly nibbled on by the cricket.  As for he habitat, does the picture show the whole thing? Seems a little small, and there might’ve been a few too...

Well, it could be some dangerous bug got in there and killed her. It could also be that she got stuck somewhere and mutilated herself trying to get out. Were there any feeders in there? Do you have any pics of her habitat set up?

Were the damaged legs from a past mismolt, or did you just find them like that today?

L3 does seem a little late to still be feeding Hydei for this species. I’m assuming they’re about the same size as the mantis in this video?

It might not hatch. I got three Chinese ooths, and only one hatched. You just don’t know if it was in healthy conditions prior or you receiving it, and three and half months is quite a while. Of course, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t keep it a little longer, but don’t put all your hopes...

Based on what I’ve read, if it is Black Death or an infection, the vomit will smell really bad. So if you can, try to catch a whiff. I don’t think it’s too uncommon for mantids to vomit occasionally without any infections or illnesses. keep on the lookout for other symptoms, like lethargy and...

The video of Flash kind of reminds me of this old YouTube video of an ant that got sprayed with Raid. Of course, the ant was sprayed directly, and so died in a matter of minutes. No idea if pesticides played a role, as most aren’t very harmful to mantids, but it’s possible.

 Cute little mantis, congratulations! That’s an awesome species. Looks female to me based on the shape of the prothorax, but I could be wrong.  Good luck with the new fella!

I did it before. It was a young Stagmomantis nymph, and I fed him to my dead leaf mantis after my fruit fly culture crashed. He was named and everything, but didn’t want the desiccata to starve. I felt awful, and kept questioning what gave me the right to decide which mantid’s life was worth...

Both links are several years old, but I don’t think anything has changed. You have to catch them in the wild, you can’t order or ship them in the U.S.

Sorry for your loss. She was quite beautiful. The worst deaths are the ones where you never get an explanation, I think. Good luck with your other nymphs, though!
