    Bite on wingbud

@Little Mantis Honey really is a miracle, isn’t it? @MantisGirl13 Pictures would help, but based on what you described, she probably will have deformed wings. I once saw my mantis *** herself in the eye, but she looked unharmed. With her next molt, however, it revealed a brown spot where she...

    Greetings from Maryland!

Welcome to the forum! I’ve always wondered, do you specialize in studying certain types of insects, or do you just kind of study them all?  Either way, I’m glad to have a scientist here, as I’m sure everyone else is.

    30 Million-Year-Old preserved Praying Mantis

That is beautifully preserved. Much better than I’ve done with hand sanitizer!  It is impressive what effective predators they are, to have remained unchanged for so long. Thanks for sharing!

What type of Mantis do I have?

They both look female to me. Females typically have shorter and thinner antennae. The end of their abdomen’s are also one large segment, whereas males have several smaller segments leading to the rear.

    Local mantis population question

Carolinas are native, and Europeans tend to be less aggressive and smaller, and so as not as much a threat to native species, as opposed to the Chinese mantises. For us, I don’t think there’s any particular benefit for using these alternative mantids, as we have the Stagmomantis in culture and...

How often and how much to feed L2 nymphs?

Don’t worry, this is a fairly common question. Just keep feeding them until they look nice and plump. There’s no particular schedule that should be followed. You just have to kind of eyeball it.  If your mantis is running away from the flies, that’s a good sign they’re getting ready to molt, at...

    Making orchid mantis pink

@Predatorhousepet I read that as well. I don’t remember where, but it’s mentioned lower down in this article.  It doesn’t say much about what causes color change, but it does mention the hues may help attract pollinators. Maybe pollen or hunger plays a role? Also, did you guys both order from...

controlling humidity in a 32oz cup

Height is only an issue if the ooth is too low. Being too high isn’t really an issue because nymphs crawl back up onto the ooth and surface upon hatching, and the few that fall kind of ‘glide’ gently to the ground. This video show the process pretty well:

    Deroplatys Dessicata Feeding Question

Your mantis looks nice and plump. This species is very docile from my experience, and take their time catching all the prey. As long as the little guys aren’t about to molt, leaving the flies in there for them to finish later shouldn’t pose any danger. If they start running away from the flies...

    Hello!

Welcome to the forums! I’m sure everyone here can relate to getting some weird looks.

    Split along side of abdomen?

Not sure what you’re referring to, but here’s a pic of my old European mantis, also male. Their abdomens sometimes look like they’re “bulging” out of their exoskeleton, but they can generally handle a lot of food without issue, and most know when to stop. your mantis looks healthy to me.

How often do male mantids eat as adults anyway?

Different species, but I remember one of my male S. limbata only ate three meals a week. His mate, on the other hand, ate twice as much per feeding nearly everyday.

    This heat is pretty lame

I’ve been waiting almost a month for the temps to cool to order a mantis. Still waiting! It’s definitely very frustrating. And yes. It’s likely he’s about to molt. Good luck!

    Making orchid mantis pink

I dug up some old threads. Apparently this is one of those age-old unanswered mysteries. The first thread suggests it helps to provide more lighting, an the second suggests simply raising humidity and temp and adding pink flowers (supposedly real ones work better, perhaps because they also...

    Thing 1 - mis-molt? Wings aren't right

If it’s just his wings that’re messed up, he should be fine. As long as he is otherwise behaving normally, I wouldn’t worry.
