Camelomantis slowly recovering but eye swelling getting worse

She's still hanging in there. She's able to cling sideways on the glass & branches but has not tried to hang inverted as far as I can tell. I still can't get her to accept any insects but she seems to be doing well enough on the bug burger slurry, she eats a good amount of it every day and...

Camelomantis slowly recovering but eye swelling getting worse

Yeah, I have no idea either. Never seen anything quite like that before, maybe some sort of extreme mantis glaucoma? It came on suddenly though so I was leaning more toward injury or infection. Mantids are highly visual so it would make sense for them to depend on vision to balance and...

Different angle, eating bug burger slurry Her healthy sister of the same age.

Camelomantis slowly recovering but eye swelling getting worse

I took some pics but imgur is acting up again and won't let me upload, I'll try to find another image hosting service. The left eye has a large black bulge while the right one has a less noticeable bulge but both of her eyes look misshapen, bruised, purple and swollen. I very much doubt she can...

Camelomantis slowly recovering but eye swelling getting worse

I have a Camelomantis adult female about 4 weeks into adulthood who I found on her back, legs up at the bottom of her terrarium 2 days ago. She was still alive but very very weak. I had been worried about her previously because she didn't seem to have much of an appetite and only half heartedly...

    Ghost mating advise

If you've been leaving them in together 24/7 there isn't a whole lot more you can do other than what we've already suggested but do make sure they have enough privacy. You want to minimize all distractions: block their view of the outside world, make their enclosure warm and quiet and the light...

    Ghost mating advise

It should be big enough that he can escape and hide should she rebuke his advances. Most females are not aggressive but will strike if she feels threatened. Also make sure the female has been well fed and shows no interest in going after new prey. For the most part they just get down to...

    Ghost ooth care

Sounds like your male is at the end of his lifespan. And yeah, male ghosts hardly eat anything at all but that's normal, it's just the way they are.

    Ghost ooth care

How long has he been an adult? Male ghosts don't live very long only about 6 to 8 weeks nor do they eat much. If you've mated him twice and he mounted for 12 hours he may have connected...hopefully. Treat the ooths as if they are fertile but they still may not hatch even if they are.

    Ghost ooth care

Unfortunately my ghost females have all seemed to be pretty aggressive despite stuffing them full of food beforehand. I've had several males get eaten or injured at the approach stage so now whenever possible I try to place the male directly on the female's back in order to avoid that...

    Ghost mating advise

They usually hatch within 6 weeks but according to their dedicated care sheet it can take as long as 10 weeks so it's possible your ooth could still hatch. Follow the care instructions and hope for the best.

    Ghost mating advise

Unfertilized it can take a while for a female to lay that first ooth so don't panic if it takes a lot longer than a month. After that she will regularly lay about every 2 weeks, give or take a week. Once she has been mated it could take 1 to 3 weeks to lay the fertilized ooth.  Either way if...

    First ever orchid pairing

That's ok. Even brothers from the same ooth will have slightly different genes from each other. If they come from different eggs they are not identical twins. (An ooth contains many different fertilized eggs.) However, I don't know how common or if it's even possible for identical twins to occur...

    Hysteresis' Mantis Stream - 2019

No. I haven't been able to discern any sort of pattern that one species will follow exactly and size doesn't seem to factor into it either. Among members of the same species some only take 20 minutes while other males will take days.

    Hysteresis' Mantis Stream - 2019

You can add a couple dowels just in case that's what she decides she likes, ghosts are pretty big but like to lay on 1/4" dowels so don't rule them out. But give variety. Besides dowels, include natural sticks of various diameters and popsicle sticks of both the regular and large variety if you...

    First ever orchid pairing

I don't know that one connection isn't sufficient, it should be. You can mate her again with the same male but mating her with another male is even better, that way there is more diversity in the genes of the offspring. Genetic diversity is important because it helps maintain the health of the...

    First ever orchid pairing

No, that's fine. I usually wait until the male hops off on his own because he will connect, rest a bit (could be several hours) then go again many times over the course of several days to as long as a week. At some point he'll get hungry and hop off on his own so I usually wait until then but of...

    First ever orchid pairing

You can attempt another mating but the female is probably already fertile. Some females lay only a week after mating but 20 days is not too long, it can take up to 6 weeks sometimes. As long as the current conditions are in the range of 65% to 75% humidity and 75° to 85°F you shouldn't need to...

Leaves and Twigs from the yard - Question

"Not dangerous" in regards to toxicity of a chemical is relative. Maybe not to us (unless we drink it straight from the bottle) but as you said it is used to kill things like tiny creatures. The part about leaving it in the sun to dry for several days is super critical to make sure all of it is...

Leaves and Twigs from the yard - Question

Yes, hopefully the hydrogen peroxide will have completely dried out and broken down by then but I was mainly wondering what is the purpose of putting hydrogen peroxide on sticks that boiling water and sunlight can't take care of?
