The ferns aren't planted in the substrate, they're attached to bark. They only need to be misted, so a drainage layer isn't really necessary. :)  

Aaaand they're done! The bottom container is from mantisplace. :)  The mantises will be moved into these when they are bigger.

Purchased a rhombodera megaera L3 nymph from him, mantis arrived safely and promptly ate one or two fruit flies! Was a pleasure to work with and had great communication, would recommend. :)

Thank you guys for the responses and info! I have another queston: How much/how often should I feed a nymph? My L2 hierodula venosa ate four whole fruit flies yesterday when I got it (!!).

In the same position as you currently. Ordered one orchid mantis from them on March 8th, had a bit of communication with them in the beginning but haven't heard anything since. I sent them an email yesterday, hopefully I will hear back. 

Definitely will ASAP! Ordered my hierodula venosa from bugsincyberspace earlier today, it should be here Wednesday if it ships tomorrow! Also getting a rhombodera megaera this week as well. Expect many baby pictures ;)

I'm still on the lookout for giant asians/giant mantises in general, but I am now on the search for flower mantises. This includes hymenopus coronatus, creobroter species, pseudocreobotra, etc. Will also consider rhombodera species, but I prefer the previous listed. I'm located in Livermore...

Sounds like an isolated incident. Can mantises become sick from being gravid?

Hmm, I could potentially put it on top of my lizards tank, next to the heat lamp.  If not, I can see if I have room downstairs to set up a small heat lamp.

I actually got a macro lens attachment for my phone the other day because you mentioned having one. I didn't even think about that or realize it was a thing. I haven't tested it out yet but hopefully it's as good as yours!
