    Ghost Mantis Genetics Experiment

Sounds really good @MantisGirl13. Writing up a nice paper like that looks great for a college portfolio. It really makes you stand out as I'm sure you already know. (I was in education for a little while and my girlfriend still is.)  Good luck with that and definitely make a continuing post on...

    Coronavirus: Thoughts?

Wow. Glad to hear its a mild case. My girlfriends parents also had mild cases of COVID a few months back. They described it like a really long cold and a flu leading into a cold. But glad to hear they are okay....

When to Transition to a larger Enclosure?

Yeah, search tulle fabric or you can even use some type of plastic window screen.

    Longest Lifespan

Glad to see such long lived mantids. I am raising a bunch of nymphs right now, and they are mostly pre-subs. I want them to live longer this time, so I have adjusted some things based on everyone's advice. I got raising nymphs to adulthood down to a science but keeping longer living adults (&gt...

    mantis tore off leg?

Agreed. I have mantids without legs, and they do just fine....

How can you tell if a mantis is happy?

Yes I have noticed that, and always assumed it was smelling it, LOL. But interesting topic for sure. You learn something new every day....

How can you tell if a mantis is happy?

So just certain things like pheromones.... Interesting.

How can you tell if a mantis is happy?

Antennae are used for smell, right? But I agree that its unlikely they can distinguish one human from another.

How can you tell if a mantis is happy?

The fact that I handle them better is what I lean more towards in belief. I don't dismiss the possibility that they can recognize us by sight or smell though, but I wouldn't say that I do believe it.

    Merry Christmas Eve 2020!

A little late, but Merry Christmas, and happy holidays to those who don't celebrate Christmas!

How can you tell if a mantis is happy?

What makes you think they can't? I handle my mantises every single day, and my girlfriend and other friends that come and visit notice the mantises prefer me to them. Maybe I've just gotten better at handling them?

    Ghost Mantis

Agreed. Whenever I show my mantids to people they always like the ghosts. They come out on my hand willingly and are just so sweet. Very easy to care for. Room temp or a little above and I keep them at 60-70% humidity. They are considered to be on the hearty side, grow very slowly, and (I've...

    Breeding twice?

I was just about to post this topic about my ghosts mating daily for a week or so. Good to know those oothecae are probably extra fertile!

    Longest Lifespan

Interesting take on this! I keep my mantids mostly in 8x8x12 Exo-Terras, and sometimes I wonder if its enough space for them. They do seem content hanging of the top or one of my sticks though. Also the adults I let out of the cages a lot. Most seem to like the interaction and the extra space of...

    Longest Lifespan

Im curious for all those who have seen mantids live this long...what do you feed them and how often? I'm pretty sure it's up to a lot of factors, but the  most significant one we have control over is nurtition. I just can't seem to get my adults to live all that long and wanted some help on...

    Longest Lifespan

Wow. now that's the longest I've heard of! I have a D. lobata that I just got. I think he is an L6....

    Hello!

Yeah, one every two weeks lol. I have a Brunneria borealis that puts out oothecae like that too. She gave me 11 so far!

    Longest Lifespan

Any tricks? How much do you feed adults, esp. adult females that are not mated, I was always uncertain if you are still supposed to feed them everyday even if they are producing infertile oothecae? I am going for twice a week, blue bottle flies, because I think I was overfeeding if anything....

    Longest Lifespan

I know there is much debate about how long mantids live. Some say 6 months, some a year, some u to two years. The longest I've heard/read about is 1 yr 9mo. My longest personally is >8 mo. (Total lifespan from L1 on....) I am curious, what is the longest living mantid you have ever...
