Outdoor Temps ideal for Carolina Mantids

They are rare, but present in New York so the ootheca must survive below zero temps in winter. The trouble for me is most mantids hatch in June here, by that time most wild ootheca in the south hatched so I've been unable to time it right to order them. I was told to order then store them in...

    Nobody breeds Carolina mabtids?

I've seen so few people breeding them. They are probably the most wanted mantis on this site! Simply because they are easy to raise, and people want them to release in their yards (in states they occur). Myself included I've been trying to buy the ootheca but only got imitations sent and it got...

    Help ID-ing Ooths from Ebay

I'm so mad! I ordered 20, yes 20 last year of those imitation Carolina ootheca and they are attatched to my shrubs outside. First, I hope they are cold Hardy! Second, I was buying them to naturalize the Carolina mantis which was once more common in New York but is rare. All that money spent...

What if you added colorful fake flowers in one cage with the green leaves, say Pink, think that would alter color?

    Mantis silk

I've heard baby mantids hatch and release silk. Spiderlings and some caterpillars do this right after hatching and the wind catches onto the silk and carries them to a new location, it's called ballooning. Is it possible for mantids to do this to reach new locations?

    Found a dying mantis outside

Not sure if I updated, but since my last post in November I had brought her in and kept her she ate just fine. Today she passed away from old age, she was in my care for 4 months as an adult and laid 5 ootheca which are outside so they hatch in summer to continue her legacy. So let's say she...

Wanted: Carolina mantis ootheca attached to twigs

I live on Long Island and I've heard they can survive here. I want to buy some ootheca and release the nymphs, any way I can buy them close to june when they would normally hatch here? In my area in between houses we have all shrubs that mantids thrive in, plus an area with open fields near...

    Color difference in Creo ooth...

I find what the mantis ate affects color. So if one mantis eats more crickets but the other eats more waxworms it should alter ootheca color slightly. Those look very similar to cockroach ooths!
