Is misting truly a prerequisite for keeping?

I think misting completely depends on the current humidity vs. the optimal humidity for the species. Also, depending upon the stage of development, some species may require more or less misting. In addition, there are definitely some species that prefer misting (and drinking) more often than...

    Culturing Blue Bottle Flies Nasty-ness

I second this! -Wheat bran is SUPER CHEAP from feed stores. -A 32 oz container may work for a really small quantity, but otherwise not. -My reason for die-off in the larvae state has almost always been insufficient air flow. As the larvae get larger, so does their need for air flow. If they...

    Culturing Blue Bottle Flies Nasty-ness

Hmm. Thanks for the questions. I have cultured both house flies and blue bottles.Very good ventilation is a must. It does need to be kept warm and you will need some form of dry substrate for them to pupate in when they get close to pupating. Trying to keep the dry substrate seperate from the...

    Bay Area Mantis Care wanted.

I am moving up to the Northern San Francisco Bay Area in late July/early August and will need someone in the area to care for my mantises at some time. I am willing pay for "babysitting" with mantises. If you live in/near the Bay Area or Sacramento and are willing to help, please let me know...

I have too many to handle!

Here is another idea: Go around to places with flowering shrubs and put a couple on each shrub. If the mantises are native they will find plenty of food on flowering shrubs. This is what I do with extra native mantises and they tend to do incredibly well. Especially if you have an area with...

    Fruit fly culture mites.

I do the exact same as this. The diatomaceous really does wonders in keeping out the mites. The real trick is to ensure that no mantids come in contact with the powder - which I haven't had happen yet.

    Some mantis pics.

Great pics! Spineys will display so easily. One time I just came to take a look in the enclosure and an adult female was displaying at me just for looking at her! I guess even mantids have their bad days. :D Again - great pictures! Thanks for sharing.

    WHAT!!!

Oh whatever! Perhaps he wanted a snack? I had an older male ghost lose 2 of its middle legs because of some kind of bacteria eating them up (over several days). I do not fully understand why this happens - even with plenty of ventilation - but sometimes it just does.

You know you love mantids when...

When you take a girl out to dinner by bringing her under the porch light. :D

I'm an Entomologist- ask me anything!

Thanks for your response, Trundlebug! Yes - it seems we, as a group of hobbyists have much to do to improve this situation so that we can raise a healthy, robust population of mantids.
