I have kept many species, some beautiful flower mantids, but really enjoy the big, hardy mantids.  Currently, I'm concentrating on h. membranacea.  I purchased nymphs months ago, 5 of which were sold to me as "golden."  Well lo and behold, I actually got a large, golden-pink female out of the...

    Deli Cup Modification for Nymphs

I'm sure I am not the firs do this simple modification but it works so well I wanted to share.  I just hot-glue faux foliage to the lids of deli-cups, no molting sticks required.  Must have flying insects or fruit flies so the prey gets to the top.  Too much trouble with crix anyway!  The nymphs...

    New to ghosts!

Just ordered 8 nymphs, p. paradoxa.  I've never kept them before and would LOVE tips!  I want them in colony in a terrarium and have kept chorophaea this way.  Anything special I should know?  Do I keep them together from the start?  I've read care sheets but would enjoy some anecdotal info!

HELP! Can't meet food demand for Sinensis nymphs!

I am back in the groove after not keeping mantids for several years.  Thought it would be good to start with some hierodula nymphs (doing fine on crix and houseflies) and some Chinese oothecae.  Well, I have 2 melanogaster cultures in preparation for the sinensis hatch but they've failed to...

    p. Chlorophaea ooth for sale US/UK

This ooth is from a mature female, mated repeatedly with two mature males. I know size doesn't matter with ooths but this is the largest (1 inch long and fat) I've ever seen. Beautifully formed, cast 07-31-08. The female has been fed only flying insects (lots of them) and this is the first of...

    Feeding in a Large Enclosure

As some of you know, I'm taking a break from keeping mantids but in closing shop I've seen a couple of member concerns about feeding in a large tank or enclosure. I have kept p. chlorophaea 'in community' in a 15 gallon high tank for the past year. I don't use substrate (only adults) just lots...
