    Color Changing/Adapting Mantids?

I was reading another post when the topic of inducing color adaption came up. How do you do this, and what species most often adapt? Does anyone have examples? Does anyone know how it happens? Sorry, just curious. :)

What's the best set-up for Chinese Mantids?

As you probably already know, I'm getting ready to raise some Chinese mantids. A species I have close to no experience with. It's typically dry around here, so moisture might be an issue. Does anyone have an ideal T. sinensis setup they could share the plans for? Would I need a heat lamp? A...

    Request

Does anyone have pictures of Chinese mantid nymphs? Or of them hatching? I'm curious as to what I can expect when my ooth hatches. :)

    Desert Mantids?

Are there any other mantids similar to the Desert Pebble Mantis? Ones that have adapted to a purely desert lifestyle? The reason I ask is alot of the colleges I've been looking at are in the Arizona and New Mexico area where it my be easier to keep mantids with fewer humidity needs. Plus, I...

    My Pupper

WARNING: SENTIMENTAL BLATHERING YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED I can't remember if I ever talked about her before, but I have a dog. Her name's Syd. She's a great dog, smart as a whip when she wants to be, and a spoiled brat to boot. XD She was recently diagnosed with Addison's Disease and had to stay...

    First Ooth

Most of my mantids have been caught from the wild, and I haven't had much luck with European ooths so far (if you remember Gluttony's really weird ooth she layed, two nymphs hatched from it while all the other mantids' ooths turned out to be infertile). I'm now trying out a Chinese Ooth. I have...

    Back from Hiatus

I've been gone for awhile, and most of you probably won't remember me. Life decided to turn around and bite me, so things went a little nuts for awhile. All my mantises have passed on, though I'm hoping one I released managed to lay an ooth in the shrubs. I haven't kept any mantises for...

    Just an update

Alot has happened since my internet went bad (that's why I haven't been on for awhile :( ). :D Jewel laid an ooth yesterday, but it's really small. Jewel is really protective of it, unlike what I was expecting. I'm going to try again to remove it from her enclosure today. Luka has...

    Bad molt

Well, yesterday I came home to find Luka, my Chinese male, had molted. Trouble was, the left wing had been torn at the end and hadn't formed properly. He seems alright other than that, but I still feel bad. His wing seems to be bleeding a little bit. Anything I can do? :(

    WHAT THE HECK?

Well, Gluttony finally laid an Ooth! :D Problem is, it's the weirdest looking ooth I've ever seen. Here are some photos-   Could it be fertile, or was it just layed wrong?

Just how big will a M. religiosa be right before she lays an ooth?

As you probably know, I have three mantids. Two female Europeans and one male Chinese. My first female, whom I have named Gluttony because of her insatiable appettite, is quite rotund and I'm pretty sure she will probably lay an ooth soon. Problem is, I don't know what the average size an M...

    Angry...

I found another mantis today, an adult female(I'm pretty sure) European. Well, 'found' may not be the best word. Rescue would probably fit better... I had a doctor's appointment, so I was leaving school 30 minutes early. Well, I came out the front doors, and what do I see? Five or six boys...

    Attracting a Male European Mantis

I'd like to breed my female M.religiosa with a male so that I know that any ooths she lays will be fertile. Problem is, I don't have a male European mantis in my possesion. Do you guys have any tips on where would be the best places to find male Europeans or strategies for attracting them...

    Should I be worried?

Just a couple of days ago I got a new mantis! :D But, there's something weird about his wing-buds (not an adult yet). I'm probably overreacting but here are some pictures I took- The 'lumpy' wing The normal wing for comparison Shot of his wings It this something I should keep an...

    Please Help With I.D.

While I was sick, dad caught another mantis for me! :D Unfortunately, mom took the camera with her when she went on this latest business trip, so I can't take any pictures till tomorrow evening. :( It's fairly small and lightly built, along with having eight (ten if you count the segments...

I hate the flu. Got sick and could barely move. :( Well, atleast I'm doing better now! :D

    Not eating again... ;_;

She'll eat occasionally, but not often. She's lost a little weight, but there's no sign of an ooth. I do know one food she'll never pass up, though. Newly molted crickets. And I mean NEW! They have to have molted only minutes before if she'll definitely take them. Is there any reason for this...

    Pheremones?

Does anyone know if European and other 'typical' mantids produce pheremones to attract mates? I know that a few dead-leaf species do, but not if any of the local species can. Thanks! :D

Has anyone tried selective breeding with mantids?

Have you ever focused on breeding only the largest mantids or for a specific color? Or maybe even just breeding the individuals with the calmest personalities? I was just wondering if anyone had tried a long-term selective breeding program. :)
