    Unexpected Parent

"Followed me home" LOL! That's how I got started in the hobby also... Except it was, truthfully, discovering an adult female Tenodera sinensis at work and relocating her to plants in my yard. "Followed me home" gave me a chuckle... ☺️

    Would appreciate some guidance!

I agree with all the points minomantis succinctly listed. I would add the question: how large is your enclosure (tank?). If the enclosure is too large it might preclude and enable the prey to avoid getting close enough for her to catch them. Mantises are ambush predators and generally will...

    Leaving the hobby

Good to hear you kept up with the hobby for so long. I knew you (online) when you started and you were excited and industrious about learning and raising mantids. I hope your years in the hobby gave you growth in knowledge and enjoyment. I left the hobby for different reasons (too time...

    humidifier for the bug room?

I successfully used a console humidifier in my bug room and believe it greatly helped manage and fend off mismolt problems. I usually kept it between 70 and 80% humidity, if I remember right, in there and rarely had mismolts. In conjunction with a couple of heat lamps and space heater (in the...

    Phil?

I am extremely sad to hear this.  Thank you, Yen, for letting it be known.  He was a humorous, intelligent and caring guy, a true friend, and an avid and knowledgeable mantis keeper.  I'm sure (and he would be glad to know) his posts here will still help and influence new hobbyists.  I salute...

Mummy with new hobby with kids

Welcome!  Yes, I think it's awesome to teach about and expose youngsters to animal/insect species they normally wouldn't encounter and/or possibly might have negative misconceptions about.  You might consider doing a presentation/s about mantises at school.  I contacted my son's science...

    When people leave mantid hobby

Time and attention to address critical family issues were the proverbial straws for me since last year. Haven't given up interest or hope... just tending to the most important things necessary for me to move forward in a positive direction in life. I may not have any mantids right now... but...

Idolomantis diabolica adult female molt (Video)

Fantastic video! I think your idea of adding the extra gripping surface after skin shed during the molting is a great idea. I really enjoyed this video. But if we would have been able to see it without the music, I'm sure I saw (and we would have heard her) mumbling, "Enough with the video...

    Back for Mantis Fun

Hard to say when they'll have a mind to hatch. Continuosly intent staring at them doesn't speed anything up, btw. :P  If you're anxious, maybe try bringing them in the house where the temps are warmer and more stable... and mist more regularly. Be careful to provide adequate...

    Ever feed wild mantids?

Only after capturing and keeping them in containment. If I left them outdoors... they were on their own. Just feeding the ones I had in enclosures was a big enough job! :P

    mantis condo

I love the look of your customized bookshelf/condominium. Very nice work... I can tell you put a lot of thought and effort into it. ;) But I am wondering about a couple of things. Not sure about the Velcro to fasten an opening... even if velcroed all around; just not a foolproof closing...

Where can I buy deli cups bigger than 32 oz?

Glad to see you found some containers that work... and at a great price! I found (and bought a ton) of very useful containers at the Dollar Store. They do have lots of different items we can use in this hobby, much more reasonably priced than "discount" stores.

i've never seen nymphs like this before

Hello Rogue Forest Ninja, It's nice you're raising mantids (and mantisflies, lol) at your age. Best of luck with it... and I hope you keep investigating, and maintain your obvious love of science/animals throughout your life. Working with animated graphics is also a commendable endeavor...
