How to tell if an ootheca is viable

I found this mantis religiosa ooth last year and it hatched about a dozen nymph. Appearance, unfortunately, isn't always a 100% indicator. I'd suggest after any photographing that you sew the ooth closed, record the date, store it in a jar, and wait to see if it hatches. Best wishes!

    Hope died

@Jessie It's one of the unavoidable parts of the hobby. You have to do what you think is right and in the best interest of the animal you're caring for.

How to tell if mating has occurred?

An expert will need to chime in to verify but I am under the impression that if you do not observe the mating that there aren't any physical signs that is has taken place. The female will produce ootheca regardless of whether or not she has been fertilized. I'd suggest keeping the female well...

    Dubia roaches and flies

I kept dubias for my Chinese mantis last year and they loved them. I bought about 50 mediums from my local pet store. They were kept in a black plastic tote with small holes around the top of the container for airflow. I never tried feeding the roaches dog food but instead fed them carrots...

Yes. Southern Washington. I raised these girls from ootheca that CosbyArt sent me. They were not found in the wild.

    Tenodera Sinensis Brown or Green

I raised T. Sinensis last year (12) and every single adult I had was brown (4). I don't know if there are any physical differences between the color varieties but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has anymore information about this topic.

    Last years Carolinas

Thanks! I thought so too considering I've seen wild T.Sinensis in this area (WA) but I have never seen a S.Carolina which is supposed to be native to this region.
