Nymphs too large for fruit flies, trying to choose next feeder.

I left the mantises overnight with the crickets for a few days and most of the crickets got eaten. No harm to the mantises is visible, despite y'alls doom and gloom. i think they had to get used to this strange new creature! However they were definitely too big for some of the mantises, so I...

Nymphs too large for fruit flies, trying to choose next feeder.

I put more crickets in their enclosures and now the crickets and waxworms are crawling around the bottom having a party while the mantises huddle in fear at the top. they're seriously scared of the crickets! I though these were supposed to be ferocious predators!  I looked up stable flies...

Nymphs too large for fruit flies, trying to choose next feeder.

Hey! so my 15  Chinese Nymphs are L3/L4 now, about 1 - 1.5 inches long. They're a little big for fruit flies (and all my fruit fly cultures died) so I've decided to move on too another feeder.   I came home with waxworms, mealworms and small crickets, and tried them out. It seems like they...

    Divided 2.5 gal aquarium

Nice with the sculpy! I had a similar idea to make a mantis temple of sculpy where the mantises can worship their terrifying manyheaded insectile demon god.  Ended up having waaaaay too many mantises and making all my enclosures with a stick and a paper towel only.  Maybe I'll circle back to it

L3/4 t. Sinensis nymphs Free (shipping cost only)

I've been raising a Chinese ooth hatch and I have about 20-30 of these guys left. I want to have about 5, so I have some I can give away. They hatched late April and it's early June now, so they're about two months old. Scattered between L3 and L4. They're an inch long, friendly and ferocious...

HELP! Can't meet food demand for Sinensis nymphs!

Make sure the cultures you get from petco, etc are producing.  I was in the same situation, emergency ff colony needed, and I bought a culture from petco that had been made earlier that day. (Judging from the date)  so I paid 10$ for 50 flies instead of a constantly hatching culture...  Two...

    Chinese Mantis Group Enclosure?

I've got them mostly in individual habitats. It's a lot of habitats though.  at some point I should figure out how many mantises I want to really keep.  I have 16 habitats now and it seems like I'll never bond with this many mantises... I've been thinking I would release them but it feels...

    Chinese Mantis Group Enclosure?

I got my first l3's today, some 27 days after they originally hatched. Interestingly I found an escapee in my room today and it was still l1. Maybe if they don't get much food they really will delay molting. Anyway, the l3's seem hungrier for mantisflesh than the l2's. Time for individual nymph...

    Canadian Fruit Flies

Try culturing wild fruit flies that fly.  you can make a lil trap with vinegar and old fruit and leave it outside. I made a wild fruit fly culture accidentally once when I tried to use farmers market strawberries to start a flightless culture -flying hydei and melanogaster hatched from the...

    CosbyArt mantid thread

Oh CosbyArt, I just realized.  You removed two nymphs early on and raised them individually, right? and now they're smaller than the two remaining communal ones. That makes sense if we assume cannibolism means that only larger mantises survived, maybe the two remaining ones are the two biggest...

    Awesome small mantid enclosures

Yeah I was referring to the open cups with the brightly colored plants in them in dmina's  first image. Are you keeping insects in there? How come they don't escape? they're fake flowers right?

Your post looks like a spambot posted it! Just one tease sentence without details and a  link.  I clicked the link and it goes to a blog about bugs so it's legit

    CosbyArt mantid thread

Thanks for doing the science!  I'm been keeping some communally and have noticed the communal ones are bigger too. i've been keeping l2's together and haven't noticed too much cannibolism - most of the recent deaths seem to be from late  molts to l2 that mismolt and get trapped in their skin...

    Canadian Fruit Flies

Will Amazon send them to you?  http://www.amazon.com/Producing-Flightless-Drosophila-Hydei-Culture/dp/B00JJWEPG0/ref=pd_bxgy_199_img_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1NN2DFSB2HBETZXFFJW3 I did some searching around and indeed it's really hard to find someone who will ship them to Canada!

    Canadian Fruit Flies

I don't think it will be a good idea to feed an ooth entirely off of dead bugs.  Feeding with dead bugs sounds like it takes lots of effort and with an ooth there are literally 150 of the buggers.    They need live prey!
