12/14/2008 - Ms. Weird Eyes WAS fertile!
Katnapper posted a blog entry in Katnapper's Mantis Journey
Lo and behold... when I looked in on the bug room this morning, I got a big surprise! After checking all the mantids, I went over to the other shelves to check the ooths. Whoooa!!! Lots of tiny T. sinensis babies all zinging around in the large container! I had 2 ooths in there incubating... one collected from the wild in November, and one of four that my wild caught Chinese female had laid in captivity on 10/19/2008. I never did find her a mate, so I was unsure if she was fertile or not. She obviously was... the evidence was hanging from this first-laid, square-cornered ooth. The b -

A few days later and he mated with Goliath! Such skills he has! Lol. He mated with her for about 6 hours. Again jumped off and was fine.So now I have 2 fertile females. Goliath is nearly 4" so her female babies should end up being around the same size.© Alexander White

Finally, a male that knows what he's doing! He mated with her for quite a while. I believe it was 7 hours. He jumped off and was fine. He's a PRO!© Alexander White

Emerald flares her wings, Adult female Tenodera sinensis

I caught this wild female about 1 1/2 weeks ago. She is crazy. She's a wild, wild beast. She was already an adult when I'd found her. I was out collecting bugs for my other mantids, some food, and saw her in the middle of the patch of flowers, where all the bees were. She was stiff as a board and was sticking her arms out straight in front of her, trying to be a stick. I loved her colors so I took her home and released a different female (Tenosa), who had just reached adulthood.© Alexander White

I was feeding all my mantids maggots and my Tenodera sinensis adult female Cheech accidentally pinched me instead, and it hurt more than usual, it pierced through my skin, its never before gone all the way through. Pretty impressive lol. But anyways it swelled up and got itchy and began to sting, look at the reaction i had. has anyone ever had a reaction like that when pinched by their mantid? It felt kind of like a bee sting. Its still swollen to this moment. Maybe she got maggotty gutness in my finger. I kind of want to laugh because im so impressed that she was able to do this to me. I let my dad name this one when she was L1. He named her "Curious George" because she was curious-looking. LOL. Now that I've sexed her, I've decided her first name is "Curious" and her last name is "George". xP© Alexander White
