Anyone have any tips on getting rid of them? They come at night and are destroying some of my plants! They are small brown beetles. They hide in the ground at night. I tried one of those traps that was supposed to lure them in but it didn't even catch one. I've been going out at night and picking them off and killing them.

Yeah, that's the scarab that looks a lot like a May bug, about 1/3" (~8cm)? If you've got a strong porch light, as you probably know already, they'll be attracted to that, and you'll also find them hanging to a wall or beam next morning.

Trouble is, they're already in the roots, and the only thing that I know to use is a soil pesticide that can get down to the roots. Is using that a problem for you and all your wildlife? We don't have it this far west, but I understand that it's a serious pest in yr state, so any good garden store or nursery should be able to tell you the best kind of insecticide to use for yr area.

Good luck!

One guy at the nursery told me to just deal with it and eventually they will go away. They are eating all of the leaves from my peppers, blackberries, and a butterfly bush. I try not to use any chemicals I have box turtles that live outdoors and a dog who goes out. I did read it was easier to kill the grubs. I did have a toad giving me a hand last night. He was sitting under my bush eating them when they hit the ground. We have other butterfly bushes in the neighborhood and they are not touching those. Why mine? It was planted this year so maybe because it is new or something? I need a few adult female chinese on each plant to help out. It has been a constant battle this year against bugs.

The sad thing is Rick that if you kill yours, there in your neighborhood and town so they will be around but, you can get more toads and what evers around that will eat them.
