Well I posted this on fb and I’m curious how other people will react so here goes...
Slightly controversial idea but this has been on my mind for a while but recently I’m seeing some more rare or uncommon sp becoming available here in the states. While this is good, I feel like some of these sp should not be kept by the general public or at least should not be kept by people with the intentions of keeping them “just as a pet.” There are species in the past couple years that were pretty uncommon but basically all but fizzled out(statillia, epaphrodita, acanthops, mettilia, etc) that just managed to make it in the hobby but they quickly fizzled out. There are some people that keep some of these sp and there are people that do keep more uncommon sp, but until they become as established in the hobby like ghosts or giant asians, they should not be available for people other than those who have experience breeding mantids and will be able to keep them for several generations until they have enough to distribute to other breeders and the cycle repeats. I have seen some species like choeradodis, helvia, and others begin popping up but my main concern is that people’ll keep them for a bit, find them too difficult or lose interest in breeding them, and just drop then altogether.
