Hello from Northern Virginia! I'm new to mantids, but have in the past kept various reptiles, so vaguely know my way around a terrarium.

I went looking for an easy 'exotic' to introduce to my kids, and a was struck by inspiration when a nymph crawled up my jeans while I was sitting quietly at an outdoor event. Sadly, inspiration struck slowly and after that nymph was sent on his way, so now I'm looking to get a mantis (or two?) as a pet. I figure I'll start with something easy and native like a Chinese or Carolina before graduation to something more exotic like a ghost or orchid.

Anyway, glad to have found this place!

bug-cats or cat-bugs? That is the real question.

Ghosts actually make great beginner mantises too (and are fairly cheap to purchase). If that's a mantis you have in mind, I'd say go for it!
