Hi I'm Dan, I've looked after many different pets since I was little but mantids are a bit new to me. The only I've personally had was several years ago, a rehomed adult male chinese mantis so he didn't have that long left (didn't really know how old he was).

Anyway I've always wanted to try and keep some "properly" plus my son is getting interested in pets of all sorts and the best place to source information and quality animals is always private breeders in my experience. So it led me here.

Welcome to the forum!

This place has a great community, they can answer all their questions. This is the best place to find healthy Mantids and quality supplies, there are lots of great breeders here.

Enjoy your time here!

Welcome to the forum!  I'm sure you'll find lots of helpful information, and hopefully the species you want to keep too!

Hello Dan and welcome to the forum

Great to hear you have someone to share the hobby with too.

Thank you for the warm welcome, this forum is much more bustling than I thought it would be. Definitely a good thing.  Well my next step is attempting to source a couple of animals.

I'm in the uk, cambridgeshire specifically, any good advice about best places to obtain some mantis?

Thank you, I had a look and have placed an order. So just got to finish off organising their homes.

Well I personally like the more robust species so I went for rhombodera extensicollis, sphodromantis "blue flash" and because I have some little tubs that will be perfect for smaller animals, miomantis paykullii.

Hopefully I will be able to get a decent picture or two.

@danl82 Some great species with unique characteristics, and plenty of size too. I really enjoy my "giant" mantids, but the smaller species seem to draw me more.

If I had to guess why I seem to prefer smaller species I would have to say it is because of the small habitat space and ability to keep more, are easy to keep cultures/feeder species and in numbers to feed the mantids, and most are more active and friendly (likely as they are smaller do not bother with threat displays and such).

The small Miomantis paykullii is one species I've hatched from a ooth and enjoyed. Especially as nymphs their exoskeleton seems semi-transparent which was interesting. You can see it in a few photos of the caresheet here (especially in the green colored mantids). :)
