How do I get the male to let go when the lovin is over?

Just be patient. The male will make his escape when he is ready. Trying to pry him off may result in unnecessary damage to him, her or both!

I was patient with my H. multispina male for 3 days, and he was eaten even though I kept feeding the female. The female was already very fat, and was calling when I let him go to her. Now she looks about to explode. :sweatdrop:

Even if my male was eaten, I don't like to try to pry off males, cause this particular male had caused my female some damage just mounting her. Her wing was bleeding a little and there were pricks in the soft sides of her abdomen from the last time they mated, and when I came close, he would grip tighter and I was afraid that he would hurt her even more. He was so rough! I have never before had a male that damaged a female.

I am sad that he was eaten but maybe he just got what was coming to him. He was on her for at least 3 days and didn't connect when I was looking anyway. I found his wings, a hard part of pronotum, and spermatophore on the bottom of the container.

I use my forceps if a big guy, bamboo if smaller, I just go from behind and slip it under him and pull up a bit hoping he will let go, doenst alwys work, but, careful, he can cut her if he holds on to tight.

You're not alone on this one. I've had cases like this before but for European mantids. The adult male usually goes lightly when he's still fresh. He gets rougher as he ages.

It either works or it doesn't. I am afraid that I may break one of them if they hold on tight. They are so strong.

I had an old male out for a while a few days ago. He was missing his back feet and really used his claws to hold on to anything he was on.

When he was on my finger and I was trying to put him in the container, he would squeeze until my finger was white, then he would let up a little when I pulled my finger out of the container, but he wouldn't completely let go. I tried a few times but it hurt alot everytime my finger entered the container's opening. I just let him stay on my finger until he calmed down, and put him on a house plant. :surrender:

Lucky for me, that his tibia part of his claws were on my nail and my skin didn't break, but the pressure he could exert was amazing. This being from a mantis that wasn't trying to mate, he just didn't want to be contained. I let him stay on that plant and fed him there until he was pretty much dead. If it was his final wish, then so be it. ;)

I think there are 2 threads, cause I thought the same thing and then found our responses at a later time. At first I thought that my post was deleted, but I don't remember it being against any rules or anything.

That sounds about right. It seems as if he jabbed her abdomen sides with his rear legs on the second mating. On his third time, her wings were bleeding a little and he kept gripping her around the forecoxae. <_< The female is a bit marked up but seems fine otherwise.

i saw this in odontomantis

the male mounted and connected and a half hour later, he disconnected but stayed mounted

then he connected again just a few minutes later

he did this 3 times

mybe that's what yours are doing

just a suggestion
