You're not alone on this one. I've had cases like this before but for European mantids. The adult male usually goes lightly when he's still fresh. He gets rougher as he ages.Even if my male was eaten, I don't like to try to pry off males, cause this particular male had caused my female some damage just mounting her. Her wing was bleeding a little and there were pricks in the soft sides of her abdomen from the last time they mated, and when I came close, he would grip tighter and I was afraid that he would hurt her even more. He was so rough! I have never before had a male that damaged a female.
It either works or it doesn't. I am afraid that I may break one of them if they hold on tight. They are so strong.I use my forceps if a big guy, bamboo if smaller, I just go from behind and slip it under him and pull up a bit hoping he will let go, doenst alwys work, but, careful, he can cut her if he holds on to tight.
I think there are 2 threads, cause I thought the same thing and then found our responses at a later time. At first I thought that my post was deleted, but I don't remember it being against any rules or anything. :mellow:What happened to this thread? Lylelovett's two intitial posts and my answer have vanished!
That sounds about right. It seems as if he jabbed her abdomen sides with his rear legs on the second mating. On his third time, her wings were bleeding a little and he kept gripping her around the forecoxae. <_< The female is a bit marked up but seems fine otherwise. You're not alone on this one.
