Hello, i found a praying mantis and eventually let it go after looking at it for a while, but this sparked an intrest in mantids. Im 16 and I finally convinced my parents to let me get one. I picked it up at the NY reptile show, it was a second instar. I lost count but I beleive it to be about 6th instar, it was labeled as hier

Sorry, as I was saying it was labeled as hierodula sp. malaysian mantis. Idk if its the giant one or what so if someone could give me an ID that would be great

Thanks, daniel

She could possibly be Hierodula multispina judging by the spines on her coxae. Can you get a photo of the front of her prothorax (chest)?

see it has spots like a giant asian, but the inside of its forearms look like sphodramantis, so idk. Most liekly a hierodula sp. Can we just call it sphierodula?

Haha sphierodula, i guess ill just have to wait for his next molt

It is hard to say as I can't see the chest markings I was looking for from that angle, but I am still thinking of the possibility of her being H.multispina.

Many of mine have a facelike marking in their chest.

Edit: Alex, you do have a point about the legs.

Cant be hierodula multispina, the legs r not reticulated enough I still think sphodromantis viridis
Its definitely hierodula. I've seen the yellow on the inside of the arms before in some pictures in the classifieds section. I believe it was being sold as unknown hierodula though.
