As I have stated before the Breeders Feedback is a very useful place for us to check when dealing with people offering ooths and such, I even go so far as having them send me ooths first and if looking good and hatching they get paid, other wise no deal. This is mainly for new people I have had no dealings with. This is hard to do, because you feel "boy this is too good to pass up"! But pass it up you must. Just last month someone I always buy off of send me ooths from Africa, I recieved the ooths and the one was so dried up and full of holes, the other just full of holes and u could tell both were hatched already, I told my supplier I was really unhappy with what he sent me and he refunded all my money which was in the hundreds. But this does not happen unless you know your supplier well. It is easy to be taken advantage of even here on our forum, new people sign up and before you know it they have something to sell. I learned the hard way that all is not as it seems, so even though it takes awhile to search out the Breeders feedback section sometimes, it is well worth the time and if in doubt, ask about the person or ask one of the moderators if they know of a Breeders feedback for them or if they have heard of them. This way you can make a more knowledgeable decision. ;)

Bless your heart, Rebecca! This is the best advice that I have seen in a long time. I am a crusty old Chicagoan at heart, and I can sniff out crooks and sharp practitioners better than a drug-sniffing dog. Although you had a long and consistently excellent record on Breeders' Feedback when I placed a first order with you, I didn't know you, so I still took the precaution of asking you if, given my circumstances, you would recommend anything else. This gave you a perfect excuse to pad the order, but in fact, you reduced it slightly and now have another long-term customer.

Con men normally rely on on the greed of their victims. Here they rely on a degree of trust and good nature on the part of many forum members that totally amazes me, though it may be because the vast majority of vendors here are equally honest and good natured. So far as I am concerned, if I send you money and you cannot send me the goods that I paid for right away, due to the sudden death of all of your breeding stock, the suicide of your spouse, the explosion of your computer, the contracting of one or more fatal diseases, or a case of debilitating dementia, just refund my money NOW, and we can renegotiate when you get back on track, but don't expect me to wait for months before filing a grievance with PayPal and exposing you on this forum.

By the way, I have 200 fresh Hierodula salomonis ooths available at 20/$100 plus shipping. I prefer payment by cash in an envelope. Anyone interested?

Amen,

I've seen many many times on all kinds of forums that some guy signs up and his first post is: i save (insert item) for (insert a way to low price)...

That's EXACTLY why i never want to buy anything from people without any feedback.

I've seen the best things here for sale but i didn't want to be scammed.

and there are also people without feedback(like me) but who are much active and have much friends, i would buy off cause i don't expect 'em to "disappear".

and, phillinyuma, i'll trade 12 fertile idolomantis ooths for ya.

Thanks Rebecca, excellent information. I was into some bad stuff at one point in my life and traveled far and wide for what I wanted. In the process I gained some pretty good skills with negotiating deals and seeing through a scam. The problem is, it didn't translate very well to the mantid community. I naively thought that it was untouched by scammers because of all the wonderful people here in this forum. I had no idea, that even here, I would get ripped off. I didn't think that it would happen here. Stupid of me! Now I am out $70. The only good thing is, unlike heroin, what I buy here is legal so I can actually take it to a higher authority and hopefully get my cash back in my pockets.

Lesson learned, I guess. I hope this never happens to anyone here again. Of all people, no one here deserves it!

This post and others have been discussed in the moderators' forum and it was agreed that it will soon be moved.

First, a few clarifications:

The Breeder Feedback section is for factual accounts of personal transactions only. While Hibiscusmile's points are well intentioned, they were posted in the wrong place.

Also, I'm a regular listener to the Dave Ramsey Show and I hear stories about people getting ripped off by family members (of all people) all the time. It's sad, but it's a fact of life in the world and sometimes in our own homes. I like to think of the Mantidforum community as a family. Security is an important feeling to have, especially when money is involved. Part of maintaining that feeling is being responsible for yourself. Just as in the "real world", there are many steps you can take here to protect yourself online and no financial transactions should be entered into without a little bit of research on the seller.

I've seen a recent increase in concern over some of the sellers on this forum, and for good and natural reasons. I would like to underscore Hibiscusmile's great advice by agreeing that buyers need to make small, first-time transactions with new or unknown sellers.

But I also believe that the great majority of members are trustworthy. Breeder Feedback does the rest and your contriibutions to these sections is a huge favor to the rest of the community.
