    Blue Bottle fly Help

Good info.  Thanks.  I'm trying another 30 or so.  We'll see what happens.  I'll keep the less ventilation thing in mind.

Not misting them BTW.  I just keep a moist piece of paper towel (moistened daily) in the cup.  No substrate.  The spikes start pupating within a couple days.

    Blue Bottle fly Help

Ok folks... Here's my update.  I purchased 1000 spikes from my local bait store.  Tried in vain to hatch the pupae in the container (which made up about 50% of them.  They appeared to start pupating either on the way to the shop or because he left them out of the fridge.  No luck. I tried again...

    Blue Bottle fly Help

Yeah I'm trying some on the balcony as well.  It's been hot and humid.  The others I'm trying in the house (gets up to 80 during the day). They were 75% pupating when I got them.  I've still got some spikes so I suppose there's still hope of getting some of them to hatch. I'm wondering how...

    Blue Bottle fly Help

Hi all.  I bought a bunch of spikes from a local bait shop (1000 ct 😲) and I've been keeping the pupae out in small deli cups on paper towel and lightly misting once a day or so.  It's been a week or so, but no hatches yet.  Am I doing something wrong?  The rest are in the fridge.  I cut one...

    Mantids for Kids

Got one for a co-worker for her 2 y/o son.  She wanted to get him an ant farm, which are lame and filled with fire ants (which I learned the hard way).  She settled on an S. Gastrica.  I hope he/she doesn't become aggressive as it gets bigger. I have some Ghosts (which she wasn't too stoked...

    Mantids for Kids

What are your thoughts on mantids for kids pets?  At first glance it appeared there was little to no worry of a bite or a pinch, but after reading the forum I'm a little worried about little fingers.  Should I stay away from the bigger species?

Hey Violet.  I haven't had the chance to keep CP's in years, but they're super cool and fun.  I'd suggest California Carnivores to get started!

Thanks!  I can't seem to get ahold of anyone for mantids.  I have a few species in mind. Sure I can pass on what I've learned from my time with carnivorous plants.  Message me.

    Mantis Noob

Hi folks!  Here for my mandatory introduction. ? I'm new to mantids, but I've been researching them for some time.  I became aware that mantid collecting, keeping and breeding was a "thing" when I got into carnivorous plants years ago. I'm hoping to get some tips and tricks here... but...
