    Wingless fruit flies for trade

Hi, I have an old culture of wingless fruit flies I'm willing to trade for fly pupae. Housefly, bluebottle, whatever. I'm not picky, I just want flies. ;p I bought the D. Melanogaster March 25th, made a new culture, and some of them are probably developing wings. Hah. Just contact me if you...

    Backyard gecko

Since the nights started heating up, we've had a mysterious explosion in the moth population around our house, so while I was out hunting for a special treat for the mantises, I saw this little guy hanging out above our door. Not sure what he is, but I thought you'd enjoy him as much as I did! :)

    Sick Chinese Mantis

One of my females has been acting very strange. I noticed her head was drooping but not making any response when I waved my hand in front of her or tried to get her attention. This morning, she looks worst, she's not even standing up, just kind of lying there on this slope of netting I have in...

    Lacewing eggs

Surprise! Thanks to the people in my other thread that confirmed this, mantid food laid me a bunch of eggs I don't want because I have a million of these guys in my backyard. Plus I don't know the first thing about them anyway. I'm hesitant to ship outside the US, because A. Never done it...

The lacewing got the last laugh

I really, really don't know what category this would fit in. I caught a lacewing last night. Pretty little bugger, but he's also small enough to be eaten. So I chuck him in the mantis tank. Nobody seems interested, oh well, they'll get him when they're hungry, right? So I wake up the...

    lid for a 10gal.

I know Petsmart sells those reptile lids with the metal mesh and Ebay has "Tough-Top" screen covers too. Are those any good for mantids or is the cloth-like veil stuff better? I have a ton of veil and a glue gun, I guess I could make one, but what would use as a frame? Is there such a thing as...

    I'm a mommy! :p

I turn around in my chair and woosh! Chinese nymph explosion! Once I get some pants out of the laundry I'll be releasing them into the garden and I'll take pictures too, to upload later.

    First molt!

My poor mantis, he fell during his molt. I'm very surprised, it's been, what 5-6 days since he hatched? Even so, I looked over and there we was, hanging upside down on his branch. I practically flipped and decided to leave him alone like I've read. Sadly, I came back, couldn't find him and to...

    Ootheca ID?

I spotted this on the neighbor's wall and couldn't help but wonder if anyone could tell me what kind it is. Although, I really hope it's a mantis ooth and not some twisted cricket or roach, so I don't look too silly asking. It was very small, under an inch.

    Another humidity question. :p

I live in a very dry climate, like 5-20% on most days. Is spritzing my two nymphs once in the morning and afternoon enough? I also have 4 ooths as well, should I be spritzing them, too? Our house is always 75-80 degrees, so I'm not worried about that. They're just Chinese mantises, by the way...

    Hiya!

Hi, I'm Marilyn, I'm so happy to have found a forum like this! I was actually looking for some tips of capturing fruit flies.. hah. I very recently got a hold of 5(!) Chinese praying mantis oothecas to help control all the crazy bugs that have popped up in my garden. Unfortunately, one ootheca...
