    Video requests!

Does anyone have videos for: * A hangingfly catching prey with its hind legs? I still can not imagine a crane-fly lookalike catching prey with its hind legs. It's already weird enough that they evolved raptorial hind legs instead of raptorial fore legs. Kinda cumbersome you'd think lol. In...

Why do some websites refer to nymphs as larvae?

I've always understood the term, "larvae," is used strictly for the non-adult form of invertebrates that don't resemble their parents, e.g. beetle larvae look completely different from adults. Mantis young are definitely nymphs, so why do some websites call them nymphs? Incorrect translation...

    Lesser known unique looking mantises!

Please feel free to contribute pics as well! :) Orthodera sp. Anyone know what species this guy is? I have other pics, e.g. Acanthops falcata, Deroplatys sp., Eremiaphila sp., Euchomenella macrops, Metallyticus sp., Paratoxodera sp. (not my pics, but pics I saved  ), but I think...

Problems with inbreeding/lack of genetic diversity?

Have you guys ever noticed problems with this, and if so, how many generations in do you start noticing these problems? Surely, inbreeding can't be healthy.

Crickets just know not to eat each other???

As long as they're not starving at least. I've never kept crickets, but now I'm curious. If you breed crickets, what is stopping a cricket from eating another cricket while it is molting? During that time, that molting crickets is completely helpless. If crickets won't hesitate to capitalize...

Why you gotta be cautious when feeding wasps to your mantis

orchid mantises seem to have relatively much larger raptorial forelegs...i would guess the forelegs are better armored too since these guys have adapted to feed primarily on flying insects?

Female orchids' insanely larger than males

i was just reading yen-saw's other mating pics thread, and he seem to be implying that the females and males are generally the same size until after the very last molt. am i understanding this correcty? if so, that is just nuts...how is it possible to expand THAT much after a molt?????

This is what I call BIASED, UNTRUTHFUL filmmaking

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBDdIZiSgQ8 Come on, really, EVERYBODY **KNOWS** a mantis would kick a Japanese giant hornet's abdomen anyday, even if Japanese giant hornets are the -edit- of the insect world...

What is the evolutionary advantage of this?

The male orchid mantis is INCREDIBLY TINY compared to the female. Why?

How does a mantis know where the head of an insect is?

Does it also know where the head of a fish or a mouse is? I saw a video of a mantis killing a live mouse and it went for the head/neck area. Then there was Rick's pic of a mantis eating a fish, but if the fish was already dead, it may be because the prey needs to be alive for the mantis to...
