    Critters in my fly culture??

There's tiny white moving dots in my fruit fly culture... I've never seen anything like it before. They definitely aren't maggots.. usually maggots just squim in place, where these tiny things appear to be moving around, rather speedily. They are about 1/5 of a pinhead. Shape is roughly...

    Fruit fly medium

Dehydrated Mashed potato flakes. AFAICT, commercial preparations are simply dehydrated potatoes with a mold inhibitor and dye so you don't accidentally eat it.

    Good shipping practices.

I am of the mindset that mantids should *always* be shipped via overnight shipping, however, I've noticed that not all believe that. I also believe Ooths should also be shipped via a faster-than normal method, just in case. It seems irresponsible to me to ship any living thing via standard...

    Dylan Dobell (Very Negative)

Two weeks ago, I ordered a B. Mendica from Dylan. It's been a gong show of frustration, bad customer service, lies, and wasted time. Problems: 1) Shipping gouging and disorganization: Despite me specifically asking for expresspost shipping, receiving a quote for expresspost from Dylan...

    Do you name your mantids?

If I have "favorite" mantids, I name them. Wahlberghi names: ---------------------- butterfingers, pegasus, amigo, popeye, "The Jackson 5" (Because they "Lighten" as they get older :-) ) Tenodera names: --------------------- Timmeh, Vantis. What names have you given your mantids?

    Using Sticks from outside?

Conventional wisdom says not to contaminate your mantis enclosure with sticks from outside. What if they are microwaved for 30 seconds first? Would that not kill any potention parasites/mites/critters, and their eggs thus making it safe to put the stick in with your bug? I'd like to hear...

    Cloves, Cinnamon, and mantids.

I'm using cloves and cinnamon in my house as pest repellent, but am concerned about the effect this will have upon mantids. Granted, mantids travel high, while the spices are on my floor, but my house air smells like cloves. Will this stress them?

Welcome back to me: New adventures.

Well, after a haitus, it feels good to be back among so many familiar faces. I stopped mantiskeeping about a year and a half ago, for various reasons, but am now in a position to resume keeping my little alien friends. And not just resume as a hobby, but as a necessesity: The house my...

    Ultimate mantis enclosure?

After hundreds of hours spent seeking the ultimate mantis enclosure, I think I've settled on one: 1 Gal pickle jar, covered with nylon stocking: More height than width, and easily sealed with a nylon stocking to keep the crickets in, while still allowing air flow. Thoughts?

Chinooks weather and effect on Ooths.

In Western North America, East of the Rocky Mountain chain, there is a weather phenomenon known as a "Chinook", in which a fluke of weather causes mid-winter warm spells, which actually thaw the snow. They last a few days, and then pass, allowing winter to re-freeze everything. It is a...

    Repairing burst mantis?

My Tenodera female has burst due to overeating. My bad. She's got a small tear near her . There is a small bubble of gel-like fluid visible around this wound. Her "skin" around that area appears to be of a darker texture, suggesting tissue death. Is there anything I can do to repair the...
