    Brunneria borealis

Does anyone keep Brunneria borealis? I used to see these mantises all the time when I was a kid growing up in the sticks of central Arkansas back in the 80's but I never hear about anyone actually keeping them. They would seem to be a very "convenient" mantis to keep since they are inherently...

    success rate?

I am now down to 8 mantises from about 40 due to cannibalism, bad molts and other reasons I have never quite figured out since they just seem to drop dead without warning. I would like to breed the mantises I have left but I also know their are no guarantees that will happen. I do get nervous...

    Feeding your feeders

When I was keeping my leopard frog I always fed the crickets flake fish food mixed with calcium and reptile vitamins and lots of different fruits, particularly oranges and banana. If crickets are fed juicy fruits like oranges, pears, apples then no other water source is needed. Crickets also enjoy...

    Nymphs per jar?

I have been using 40 oz plastic peanut butter jars for my T.sinensis with paper towel bottoms. I cut out the plastic lid, place a piece of paper towel on top then screw the lid back down and the paper towel molds nicely to the top. The large jar size allows plenty of room for twigs and lots of...

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

I have never been to Thailand but it is on my list of places to visit, and yes,the language does transliterate to English very poorly. I am sure that now you are immersed in the Thai culture and soon to marry a Thai national the language will become second nature to you in no time. Here is a good...

    'Nother wild-caught needing an ID!

Sawadee krup! What a cool little mantis. Do you speak Thai? Thai is a beautiful language and the first foreign language I studied. The only time I use it now is at a Thai restaurant. Helps me get free "noom chah" (delicious, sweet Thai iced tea with milk). The Thai people are very friendly and...

    Which species is your favorite?

Currently my fave is T.sinensis. Like Mantidbro said, they get big and eat well but my favorite part is their eyes. I love seeing those coal black eyes in the evening contrasted with the bright green body. I saw a big female about three years ago with emerald green eyes and a smaller male with...

    Tadpole help

Maybe your tads are Spea intermontana (Great Basin Spade-foot toad). They are cool looking little toads and not a threatend species.

    Tadpole help

I have raised leopard frogs from tadpoles and it is not a hard thing to do. Be sure to do a partial water change daily to keep the water oxygenated and the ammonia levels low. Don't do a complete water change, tadpoles like slightly acidic water. Also be sure not to use chlorinated water. Nothing...

    T.sinensis nymph question

Thanks. It is not the first I have lost in that manner. I lost two others to bad molts two days in a row. But they provide food for the other mantises so it works out in the end. I am down to eight mantises now. Keeping my fingers crossed that I still have a good gender mix for breeding.
