    Phasmid Sphagnum Question

Hello, I'm interested in thoughts on safety of using live sphagnum with phasmids. I've always just assumed that it was safe, but when I did a little bit of searching I didn't get many straight answers one way or the other. Typically for my walking sticks I don't provide any substrate, as they...

    save male when breeding?

Make sure the female is very well fed prior to mating. If I recall correctly I generally had her eating something when I left the male to mount, if her claws are full she can't grab him is the logic behind that. Give them a nice open area to breed, the male will want to fly away afterward and he...

    Making my own insect jellies???

Insect jelly, like strawberry but more protein. :P Interesting choice of action, I am curious though if regularly feeding them the stuff would have ill effects on the mantids... A bottle cap with water seems simpler to me, though would require to be checked and filled more frequently. A trade...

    substrate

I tended to not use anything, that of course resulted in the need to spritz more frequently, when I did use something I often used paper towel as well. But of course that's because I never bothered to give myself the luxury of sphagnum moss, I'm growing some right now oddly enough, after I...

    Mantisplace

I am happy with my recent purchase from MantisPlace, I had ordered Egyptians, Gambians, and Budwings and had plenty of extras  they all arrived alive and well, one of the egyptians had even molted in the container they were shipped in.

male and female right? + eating honey (pics)

i believe that's right, male and female. from what i can tell the top one has a rounded end consisting of 2 segments, and the lower one is a pointed end with just one segment, which from my experience means male and female. the photos with the toothpicks are cute.

    communal insect ideas

if you want to house a variety of critters in one tank without them killing one another, then first thing to scratch off the list are any predators. Then you need to consider how similar the different critters habitats will be, temperature, humidity, food, etc.

I have 2 male GaMs and am curious on their normal size, one i raised and one i bought as an adult. The one that i raised is about 4-1/2(or so) inches from abdomen tip to mouth, the other i think is 3 inches(or so). i am hoping that the first one's size is due to feeding and living conditions as...
