What time is needed from mating to ooth laying?

I was able to get my lineola female mated last night. Good connection and they were connected all night. When I left for work, still connected.

When i got home this afternoon, they were disengaged and I noticed the female in a strange position. Upon closer observation, she was laying an ooth.

BTW...the male is safe and sound.

So...To the title of the post...What time is needed from mating to ooth laying? Should this ooth be fertile, or will the past mating fertilize only the future ooths? Will the current mating be "washed out" with an ooth being laid so soon after?

Time will tell, but i thought I'd get some opinions. Thanks

That seems really fast from mating to ooth, i would keep it but i wouldnt put money on it being fertile =/

I've had a similar situation once and mines did hatch. I say it's fertile.

No, you are right on the stick! Usually, the eggs move up the duct and are fertilized by the pool of sperm. My guess is that your ooth contains a lot of infertile eggs and that the next ooth will be fertile. But you are the man on the spot and you can tell us how it works out. I realize that this may be a way in the future, but please let us know!

I am waiting on this lineola ooth to hatch, but had a similar experience with a Budwing not long before this. I wasn't going to keep the ooth as I figured it would be no good. But against my own advice I figured I'd incubate it anyway. A few days ago it hatched about 30 nymphs. Not a lot, but enough for me to believe that a late pairing with a subsequent "immediate" ooth CAN BE viable. Not saying it will, but what does it hurt to incubate just in case? I have another Budwing ooth layed after this (and another laid a few days ago!) and will compare hatch rates.

This happend to me this week,a female ghost laid an ooth later in the day,after they uncoupled.After I returned her to her cup,sometime later,she laid 2 more ooths,small,and side by side.All perfectly formed,I'm gonna incubate them ,and see what happens.

Good luck. I'm getting little ghosties hatching. They are sooooo cute. I only wish they were easier to see. I got to get out my 10X loupe for a good look.

Thanks their also good at doing disapapering acts, good luck with yours also,I have another female mated,and another one to go.My male was so tired he just started eating today,poor guy LOL.Just remembered,when I was a child I caught two carolina mantids.In one day they mated,she ate him,and laid an ooth.Sometime later not sure,I came home from school and had little bugs all over my bedroom,my mom vacummed them up,she was mad at me.

Like clockwork...The ooth had a full hatch. :clap: I think the females will hold out as long as possible, if not mated, before laying an infertile ooth. When they get the green light it's ON! When in doubt, Inc.(incubate). it out. :lol:

I don't think so. They will lay whether mated or not. I've never seen any difference. But of course detailed experiments would have to be done to know if it makes any difference.

I think that's kinda what I said. Isn't it? :huh: Oh well. I'm glad it was fertile and hatched.

2nd budwing ooth has also hatched. This was a much larger hatch of over 100! Anybody need budwings or lineola nymphs??? :lol:
