Giant shield mantis (Rhombodera cf valida) mating. You get to see the hooks the male extrudes from his abdomen that latch onto the female internally. Pretty crazy stuff.

Music by Precarious

Precarious I love you and all of your music and videos. Could I ask you some questions about rearing idolomantis diabolica? I'm sure I'm not the first or the 20th person to ask you that. Mostly it's about what enclosure works best and how you keep the humidity and heat high and what the biggest challenges are keeping idolos.

Thanks!

This is a great thread where everyone shares their experiences raising Idolo:

You can learn everything you need to know on the first few pages.

I also have my housing situations documented here:

Enclosures and Housing: The Basics

Terrarium with lots of twigs

New Idolo Tank

The main thing is to cover the roof of the tank with twigs for later instars, and have plenty of ways for them to climb from the floor up to the twigs.

I like to use a dish of moist moss to help keep humidity up. That way the water stays in the moss and won't cause mold elsewhere in the tank. The more surface area in the tank (i.e. fake leafy vines, etc.) the more humidity as well. Personally, I don't add any heat. My tanks are generally between 70 at night and 80-85 by day. They don't mature quite as fast that way but I spend most of my time in the same room as the bugs and lights heat the whole room.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions.

How difficult of a species are these guys? Are they hard to breed?
This species is really simple; room temp (72-80), lots of humidity. Raised mainly in deli cups until pre-sub. Females are much more tolerant of males than other Rhombodera species. And they are nice and big! I'm incubating a few ooths so I'll have nymphs for sale soon.

If you are very lucky you may end up with one of these:

Rainbow Rhombodera!

How communal would you rate them from 1-10 (1 being you end up with just one plump mantis, 10 being a big happy family)

Not very communal at all. I experimented since I had a hatch of over 360 from a single ooth last generation and the population dwindled greatly over time even with plentiful food. I separated around L4-L5 and it's good I did.

Dammit Precarious, you sucked me in with all the pretty colors of the rainbow and now I just froze +30 BB flies  . I told myself I would sit in front of the computer for 1 minute while I had the flies in the freezer, that was 20 minutes ago. Lol

Thanks for the info though

Great video. Looks very familiar. :D What should the incubation for these ooths be? I now have an ooth each from 2 mated females. I believe I should be getting another one soon from the first female. Hopefully the mating was successful. I'm just looking for an idea of the time the ooth will take to hatch, temps, humidity, etc.

More mantis ****....ha! ha! Very nice and sharp video.

My female cf valida laid her second ooth. I should know in the next two weeks if the first one is fertile.

I had no trouble mating my first female. She was very receptive and made no attempt to attack the male before or after mating. However, I wasn't patient and attempted to mate the second female too soon before she was calling. She attacked the male, and he died a few days later. A few days after he died, she started calling. It's very obvious with this species.

Very cool vid like always! But do these “Rainbow Rhombodera" keep it's colors?
Unfortunately not. It was too beautiful to last. :(

I'm just glad I took photos while it was in full bloom.

R.I.P. BBs...

I incubate all my ooths the same. Mist in morning and again at night. Place on high shelf so they catch a couple extra degrees of heat. That's it. In 40 days it will explode with nymphs. I sure hope there are enough people that want these. Sounds like there will be a ton of them very soon.

Oxy **** next! Staring the red/orange Oxy female...

Great photos. I love the rusty Oxy.
She's a beauty! That's for sure.

Wait till people get a load of the purple and green mantis I have. Just had to look at him again to make sure the purple wasn't just my imagination. :sweatdrop:
