Ooh, a fat one! They are small and cute and they do not pinch you! Be careful that she does not fall (in the picture she looks high up but maybe not). That plant looks slippery for a mantis but I cannot be sure. She could easily pop her belly if she falls from a high place. Carolina Mantis right? She looks healthy. I have pictures of the Carolina Mantids I had. Here are many of my pictures.
I'm not seeing a carolina mantis, but I'm out here in California. Our Stagmomantis is green and I do know that the Carolinica do get some nice grey patterns. Please settle this. What is this mantis?

Gray adult female Carolina Mantis. Do you mean you do not see any Carolina Mantids where you are? And you see some that a similar but you do not know what kind they are? I so I guess they are Stagmomantis limbata or Stagmomantis californica.
Nah, this looks too different to be a Stagmomantis californica. It looks just like a Carolina Mantis (I cannot see anything different, I mean anything big from the ones I had). I am certain this is an adult female Carolina Mantis LOL! I would be shocked if this was not a Carolina Mantis!

My first impression was that it's a carolina too because I see the black spec on the forewing. I'm always up to learning something new if I'm wrong and so that's why I would like it to be confirmed. If it is a carolina, this is about the 3rd time I've seen on the forum that someone found a carolina mantid in California. It looks like Carolina mantids are becoming naturalized in California . Darn it! It better not be a mantid enthusiast but I'm leaning towards shipped cargo from the east.

I have heard that they only live in a part of California and they do not live on most of California. I have seen in pictures adult female brown Stagmomantis limbata with black spots like that. I have a sharp eye (most people do not believe). I can tell differences between very similar fish very well and am good at seeing the differences in mantids too (not as well because I only see them in pictures which is not good of course). The one in the picture looks just like a Carolina Mantis (I have no weird feeling that it is not)and none of the other mantids in the USA look like this except maybe that one that has no pictures and it seems to be extinct and I do not think they ever lived in California (not much information UGH!).
