I'm not sure if this is a bad idea, or if anyone has even tried it yet, but maybe you can dehydrate them in a desicating machine? If you can find a way to re-hydrate them well it could work, and there wouldn't be cell-wall damage from ice-spikes after freezing. Just an idea, maybe someone else...

Also, it's possible that a spine came off the caterpillar and was lodged inside the mantis' mouth. It might have been painful for the mantis to bite anything

It would be worse if it was the male's wings that stick out as that would make it easier for the female to grab and eat him!

Is it okay to walk around with the mantis? Sometimes, what I do is go outside and look for a few bugs for it while it is with me (on a twig) so that the mantis can catch the bug itself (I put the mantis near the bug and it is better at catching flying prey than I am). Sometimes it can be really...

hahaha :) Yeah, I remember when I was a kid, I had an anole, and his crickets ALWAYS escaped the cage. Now, I keep my crickets in a terrarium that is way too high for them to jump up. None have escaped yet! :)
