Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

The 1-2 dead cricket (my conservative rule of thumb) is for about a dozen crickets. Nice healthy crickets are tannish. When they're not doing too well, if they're not dead or sluggish, their bodies look dark. As for the PetCo crickets - I'm sure when they're shipped from the bug supplier...

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

Hold on to the crickets for 24 hours. During that time feed them really well and water them. If there's a high death rate during that 24 hours (more than 1 or 2), be safe and don't feed them to your critters. Roz.

    Vomit?!

Okay. You all are no help! That was a serious question/recommendation!   So, no gatorade, huh. . . :D

    Orchid L4 died.

Hey is this what happened to Yen Saw's mantis in this thread: http://www.mantidforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5049 Fungal? Bacterial? Two different things? How to tell the diff? Roz.

    Vomit?!

Would it be helpful to feed gatorade or pedialite to a vomitting mantis. . . . or is everyone cracking up laughing right now at the suggestion. . . Roz.

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

Kurt - What kind of bacterial infection? Was it caused by the cricket? Any signs prior to death? Or does it cause sudden death? Any thoughts on feeding the feeder insect antibiotics before feeding it out to the mantis? Roz

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

I know. PetCo. Kick me in the head. I usually don't buy anything from the chain stores other than dog food. That ONE time I was running around and decided that ONE time wouldn't hurt. ERRRR. Wrong! I usually buy crickets by the box.

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

I've had problems with crickets in the past getting them from a questionable source (PetCo). A large portion of the crickets died in the bag before I got them home. I fed them to my baby bearded dragon anyway (like a fool). My poor lizard started twitching within a few hours and died. I...

    What kind of mantis?

These suckers get about six inches? Rick- Easy for you to say. I've only seen flower and orchid mantises for sale at shows and pet stores. Otherwise, I catch mine - those that are unlucky enough to travel through my yard. Roz.

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

I always "gut load" crickets, as I have reptiles too. Maybe that's why my mantid did ok on the crickets.

Why are crickets bad for Orchids?

Self explanatory question. I raised mine completely on crickets. I didn't know any better. Roz.

    Allo!

Lorena, I used toothpicks (bamboo skewers may be easier). Used one to scoot them onto another one and then scooted them off into their new container. Roz.

    Hello from Seattle

Oh hey, BTW - you like big things. Have you seen the GIANT pill bugs? I'm not quite sure if they give me the heebeegeebees. I had a pair of the Madagascar hissing roaches at one time. The adults were cool. They had babies. The babies scurried just like regular nasty roaches. I got so...

    Hello from Seattle

I work in a law office. I've lost a few things at work by accident. Everyone panics when they see me walking around like I'm searching for something. . . that's not paperwork. Most memorable was the loss of a 6' python. Don't ask (unless you're REALLY curious). Roz.
