    Farewell, old man

I know, right? I was starting to think he might actually be immortal!  Thanks, he'll be missed around here.

    Farewell, old man

Spiderman, our peacock mantis, passed away in the night. He did well though, around 13.5 months as an adult, eating well and healthy right until the end. I think we got very lucky! He had a lovely, placid personality. Always chilled out and just seemed as happy as a mantis can seem! He'll be...

    Funny story

So, we have a peacock mantis. We got him last November as a pre sub adult (so the store told us) and he molted to adulthood about 2 months ago. The last few days he's not been moving much and it looked like his abdomen was starting to crack so I was a bit worried. Got home from work today and...

    Bent abdomen after molt

That sounds like a good idea - and a LOT easier for cleaning - but I'd never get close to the right humidity if I used paper 🙃

    Bent abdomen after molt

Honestly, I have no idea!  I've never seen him poop and with a thick layer of coco brick substrate, I can't see any in the terrarium.  So I guess all I can do is see if he keeps eating regularly and if his abdomen flattens back out again once he's had time to digest.

    Bent abdomen after molt

So, an update... He's eaten a bunch of flies this week!  Not totally sure how many but I've seen him eat 4 and I'm pretty sure he's had a few others too. I tried offering him a cricket again the other day, I held out their egg carton for him and he grabbed one, but he dropped it almost...

    Bent abdomen after molt

He has a big terrarium so they are mostly in the substrate while he's up high, I don't think they're bugging (lol) him too much. He went for one earlier when I was watching him but I don't know if he was trying to catch it and missed or if he meant to smack it away! I'm such a worrier, but I'll...

    Bent abdomen after molt

Thanks for the advice! As far as I know he's only had that one fly since molting and that was 2 days ago, so that's 1 fly in 10 days as he didn't eat for a week before the molt... that feels like not much food in a fairly long time, so I'm a bit worried about not trying to feed him for a few...

    Bent abdomen after molt

Hi Has anyone got any experience of this? It looks like our peacock mantis has got a bent abdomen after his molt to adult. Not sure if you can see in the photo but there's a kink in the abdomen towards the bottom. The humidity was low during the molt as it happened early in the morning. I went...

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

Funny how they are so different! Ours is super active and since his last molt he's started hunting and eating lots more. He only ate once a week before the molt, now I think he'd eat every second day.

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

My kids named ours Spiderman before we got to know him and it actually really suits him as he loves to climb and jump! Especially out of his terrarium 😆  He's got loads of personality. It's fascinating how they're all such individuals.

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

He's lovely!  Our peacock mantis molted to subadult (I think) last week 😊

How long do you wait after a molt?

That's what I was thinking.. it's just so hard to convince myself that it's ok for him to not eat for 9 days 🤣

How long do you wait after a molt?

Hi! I'm just curious to know how long people tend to wait before putting food in with their mantids after a molt?  We've got a male peacock mantis who just molted sometime overnight, pretty sure he's now sub adult.  He's only been eating once a week so because of the molt we're now on day 8...

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

Thanks!  I spoke to the store and found out that he had a roughly medium sized cricket on Friday.  We have crickets at home too so that should match what he's used to, so I guess he's not hungry yet. They are a great species to observe, for sure.  Ours seems to have loads of energy and he...

    Peacock Mantis time between molts?

Hi! So, we just got a peacock mantis of around the same age I think (the guy in the shop thought it's probably L5) and he's only been with us for 2 days.  I totally forgot to ask in the shop when he last ate so I'm going to contact them to ask, but it's really interesting to me that you've said...

My mantis is worrying me, again!

She died. I got up this morning to find her laying on the floor of her cage. She was twitching her limbs a little when I touched her but she wouldn't eat and things looked pretty bad, I think she was pretty much dead, so I've put her in the freezer. So sad ?

My mantis is worrying me, again!

One of the crickets I put in there earlier ran past her on the stick and she just swiped at it loads til it was gone, so I'm going try to be patient and give her space to molt without me or crickets bothering her! Thanks so much for the reassurance ?

My mantis is worrying me, again!

Thank you! I think she looks a bit fatter in those pics than in real life but maybe that's because I've zoomed in so can actually see her better... I'm never good at judging if she looks fat or skinny, lol!
