Head stuck in molt- Is it safe to use water to get it off?

Her wings came out nicely. (She just wasn't finished molting). So then I waited about an hour to try to fix her. Nothing worked. Her mandibles move, (but may be deformed), her thorax is good. There is a piece stuck in the middle of her head and her antennas are stuck downward. There is also...

    Can a clone have clones

I have a clone mantid and I wanted to experiment to see if she could have clones. (Iris oratoria). She never laid eggs, while her peers of the same age had laid 2 - 3 egg cases. I got scared so I mated her with a very respectful male outside. (No one ate no one!) She is still not laying eggs...

    Black on eye?

An Update: My guy has been living with a black eye an a half. He was doing better before the molt. Now he is not eating. I force feed him. Itt seems that once a mantid has somekind of injury, it never completely heals. That is my experience anyway.

Head stuck in molt- Is it safe to use water to get it off?

My mantid molted to an adult today. I do not know how long ago. when I came home, I saw that she is in one piece except her wings and head. I've removed skin from legs before, but is it safe to do that on a head? Will she suffocate? I want to help, but I'm afraid she is still too soft. How...

    Black on eye?

He made the molt! He is an adult now. Unfortunately he lost half his eye tissue on the bad eye and there is still a little black in it. His other eye looks worse! It is cloudy with a little black on the inside. He is eating fruit flies now, but he can't catch them too well. His wings also...

    Black on eye?

The aloe and/ or heat worked on my guy with the black eye! I have iris oratorias; they like dry heat. I don't know if it was the heat or the aloe or both that helped. But the small amount of aloe I used did not hurt him for now. Now he is eating and looks like he will molt soon. I'm still...

Can I put hydrogen peroxide on black eye?

Thanks for all the support! I didn't put hydrogen peroxide on him. I put him outside a couple nights in the 100 degree weather. I figured the dry heat would kill fungus. It looks dried up now and he is eating again. He will be adult if he makes the next molt. The problem is that one eye is...

    mantis change color?

I raise iris oratoria mantids and I have to say I am amazed at the way they can change color. I had a mantid turn from bright green to bronze 2 hours after she cannibalized another green mantid. I also tried putting one in with bright pink roses. It took 2 molts, and she turned brown...

    Amazing Mantid Story

Thanks for the stories! I love to hear them. I think it is amazing that they can tell the difference from you and other people! My Mandy is still under the shade-cloth. When I go to see her she runs towards me! I'll figure something out. I just want her safe from storms and cats for now...

    Amazing Mantid Story

I saved 2 beautiful Iris Oratoria Mantids from the cold last year in Phoenix. Now I have too many to handle. I have also had so much heartbreak from mismolts and injuries. . . I'm trying to downsize. Unfortunately, the indoor mantids are not acclimating to the outdoor 115 degree weather; I...

Can I put hydrogen peroxide on black eye?

I believe that my baby has fungus in his eye. It was suggested to me to try hydrogen peroxide. I'm afraid that it will hurt him worse, but I don't want to loose him. He is not eating.

Has anyone ever had eggs laid not protected by an ooth?

Aww. I did stop feeding her for now. She still laid eggs again today with no ooth! Is it because she is just too small?

    Black on eye?

I have the same problem with one of my mantids. I put aloe on his eye and put him outside in the 110 degree weather for a couple nights. I am scared to hurt him so I only used a tiny, tiny amount. It seemed to dry up, but he is barely eating! Are yours eating? Can we use hydrogen peroxide?

Safest way for a 3-legged molt? Help please!

Thank you! I bought a camera an even upgraded my phone. I can't get small pictures. I'm just not tech savy. She is fat again and probably ready to molt soon again. She does not use her leg and I am worried that the heavier she is the harder it will be to molt. I saw people talk about taping...

Has anyone ever had eggs laid not protected by an ooth?

My "midget" iris oratoria missed an instar. She had injured her legs and wouldn't molt for over a month and when she finally did, she skipped right to an adult. The problem is she thinks she is bigger than she really is; when I first fed her, she ate until she literally "exploded" with eggs...

    Black on eye?

Did you feed fruit flies to her? My male just molted fine but has the same black stuff on his eye, and unfortunately in his eye now. I noticed that if it is too damp the fruit-flies leave this black stuff on the bottom of the cage which looks like the same exact black stuff in his eye. I'm so...

I'm so sorry. I have an adult female in the same situation. It is heartbreaking. My heart goes out to you and your little one
