    Can mantids eat too much?

Mine stop when full. I feed mine till they get full and then wait 3-4 days and do it again. (L6-7 stagmomantis sp.) You will notice they eat slower and slower the fuller they get. Then they drop what is left and clean their arms and head.

Gator Attack Pic (don't look if you may be bothered)

I hope it didn't have babies. They were playing a loud game of Tag, your it before the gator attack. We dont like them. They are dirty, loud, and think they have the right of way on the roads v cars. I yelled at the others to go back to Canada where there are no gators.

Gator Attack Pic (don't look if you may be bothered)

My wife was upset. She gets sad when she thinks an animal is scared. I'm pretty understanding about things like this and don't get excited but its different to be there. I felt bad for the goose but I don't think it suffered too much. Im sure it was in shock. People who go into shock don't feel...

    Anyone else like fossils?

I like fossils. I collect ammonite and have a few pieces of amber, w/ and w/out inclusions and both finished and rough examples.

Gator Attack Pic (don't look if you may be bothered)

So my wife and I were eating lunch together at our pond like we do everyday when this gator came out of nowhere and takes a goose. The other geese were pissed. He was around 4 ft long. We have seen him around the pond before. I was a few feet away from him when I took the picture. It was pretty...

    Black Death?

Yea so there is a ton more liquid black gross stuff. Im sure its from the mantis. Not sure which end but that's it for my superworm as food experiment. I fed her one more (the day before these pics and none of my others) to make sure. None of the other mantids I fed did this. I read the posts...

    Black Death?

I read somewhere that black liquid in an enclosure means certain death. I think it was on a website. Searching the forum turned up nothing when searching for black liquid. I recently fed this mantid a superworm. I fed it another last night after I saw the black liquid. Anybody seen this before?

    That's my.....leg

I read that birds literally cant taste pepper. Their little tongues don't have the right receptors.

    That's my.....leg

Makes sense the defense may not target all creatures. I add hot pepper powders to my birdseed to keeps squirrels away. Birds can't taste pepper. Mammals do.

    That's my.....leg

glad everyone liked it. Thanks for the advice. Pupae it is. Not sure about the species. I left the grass around my garden untouched this year and I see them once and a while. There is another small katydid looking grasshopper that bites hard and then the occasional eastern lubber. Has anybody...

    That's my.....leg

I have been having a hard time catching flies around my area. I suspect the city sprayed something and that it affected my fly population which has been massive due to some strange berry dropping trees on my property. As such, today, I was desperate. Several small stink bug looking food items...

Worst case you've nursed back to health?

+1 I could see caring for a hurt one if it is the only one I have left of that species or if I am extra attached to a particular individual.

    tick tick ticks

I bought my first house last year and to my surprise, the back lawn was infested with ticks. I hike and primitive camp in FL so I get my regular dose of tick encounters often but this was ridiculous. Every time I came to the house (before I moved in), I got ticks on me. Same for my dog and...

    Wow, I can't believe this

Not much you can do. You might have caught it in time. Only time will tell. Let it rest. My mantid's abdomen normally look pretty thin after a shed.

    My Chinese Mantid Eating Bee

I just fed a midnight blue solitary wasp to one of my carolina mantids. She caught it, it counter attacked, she released. Later, she re-caught it and, satisfied with its positioning, ate it with no issues.

    Another BP spill

I got a kick out of this and wanted to share. I like the hair part.

My mantids have been leveling up to L5. This morning, I found 3 had. Sadly, one of them was motionless at the bottom of her cage in a crumpled lifeless mass intertwined with the shed. I picked the container to get a closer look and she sprang to life, freaked out and ran up the nearest stick...
