Where to find insect/ reptile shows?

repticon goes to Columbia SC. It's usually good but depends on the vendors. I don't remember anything but reptiles and arachnids though. I don't think I have ever seen mantids. http://www.repticon.com/

    stupid rule?

I have seen a pretty well formed British mantis forum. They might be more open to shipping out of the country to you since they are on the same continent.

    All one sex!?!?!

yea, no idea. Im guessing Stagmomantis carolina but I suppose it could be Stagmomantis floridensis. The ooth is from Fla. I guess I have to wait till final molt. Most of these pics are L4. How many molts do Stagmomantis run through. For some reason I though 6 but something tells me Im waiting for 8.

freeing my two nymps into the wild concerns

They should be ok. Mantids are all instinct. I would release them in dense/tall weed and look out for any birds or lizards when your doing it. When I was 8, I raised an io moth caterpillar (I named him Toothpaste) When he finally hatched I was so proud. I took him outside not thinking daylight...

    All one sex!?!?!

I'm so bummed. I think all my mantids are girls. Every single one of them. I was really looking forward to breeding them too. Im posting pics. I really hope I'm just ignorant with sexing them. Some are really bad but you can still just make out the segments. My ooth hatched 13. 10 L1s made it. 8...

How to catch a Wile Mantis

Does anybody know where Gonatista grisea lay ooths? I found one last year. I know they are around. I think they know I'm looking :(

    They bleed RED?!

Congratulations. I have read/heard good things about cat food. What brand did yours prefer??? I had read about feeding wet cat food to mantids all the time. I think cat food is limited to injured mantids. I tried to feed it to my healthy ones but they wont sit still for it. If Im lucky, and I...

    Mantis eatting mosquito

That one bit me when I was holding a mantis. I very carefully tapped it. That stunned it. I found it's body and mangled it's wings and then dropped it in front of the mantis. Mosquitoes are very fragile. It does not take much to destroy them. I used to catch mosquitoes for mantids when I was...

    Mantis eatting mosquito

2 leveled to L3 last night. one male, one female. :D I plan to breed them. When do I start backing off on food for males to let the females mature first? Now at L3 or when they are L4 or L5? Uploaded with ImageShack.us Uploaded with ImageShack.us

    Mantis eatting mosquito

ya, so 8 total molted fine within 3-4 days of each other. 2 still have not. I separated them and tried to feed them extra. nogo. They just dont have what it takes. Lazy with no drive. Im going to use them as food as soon as their siblings will eat them. Same parts. Same proteins and carbs and...

    dark spot on back

One of my l2s has a dark spot on the back of her thorax. None of the others do. Looks like a scab. Anybody ever seen this before? I can get a pic if it's new to everyone.

    Breed & Release

Thats kinda what I thought would happen. I don't think there is enough nymph food and that there are too many predators. I live in a suburban area with a LOT of trees. I have over 20 on my property alone and there are a ton of songbirds. Birds which eat bugs. I don't think mantids would last...

    Breed & Release

This question is mainly for veterans. Have you released ooths you bred (native only of course) only to notice that species take hold where you did not ever see them before in a certain area?

    butterfly box

I bought 2 of those butterfly screen boxes a lot of us seem to have on this forum. Question. What do you do when a mantis lays an ooth on the screen? Can you scrap it off without damaging it or do you have to trim out the screen and repair the enclosure?

    Mantis eatting mosquito

I planned that but I only got 10 out of my ootheca hatching. I want to keep 2 females and 3 males and Im giving away a few mantids too so I don't really have mantids to spare. Im concerned about male : female ratio. Im hoping its close to 5050

    Mantis eatting mosquito

Wanted to share. L2 eating mosquito. Still have 10. 6 have leveled up over the last 2-3 days. 4 haven't yet. Does anybody have experience when they start eating each other. I'm guessing I should start separating them in about 5 days when some level up to L3 and start nailing the L2s. Still...

    Hungry Mantis

Im not trying to suggest Miami or the Caribbean is swarming with bugs. Just that hot and humid conditions promote insect life. I live in FL too but in very sandy area where water doesn't sit around so I have few bugs compared to lower levels of FL. Glad to hear the pinheads are working out. Be...
