    I'm FINALLY a mantis keeper!

Well, this is my first CB, exotic mantis. I had a WC M.religiosa before.

    I'm FINALLY a mantis keeper!

I got my first mantis two weeks ago at the MI Reptile expo, courtesy of MIArachnids. Ghost mantis! :D

My mantid laid an ooth...right on the joint of the tank. Tips?

Got it off..I ruptured it slightly at the base, but I'm going to hope it's still mostly good. I hot glued it to a piece of papertowel, and I'm going to be storing it inside a glass jar (inside a brown paper bag) outside.

    Feeding in the dark

I keep all my critters in the closet, including my mantid. I threw two dubia in for her, and they were gone the next day.

My mantid laid an ooth...right on the joint of the tank. Tips?

K, I'll give it a few days. I'll have to get a plastic bag or something to glue it to..

My mantid laid an ooth...right on the joint of the tank. Tips?

So, I've been keeping an M.religiosa female I caught at work in a 10 gallon tank. Specifically, a tank with a sliding screen top. She laid the ooth so that it is about half on the screen border, and half on the edge of the tank.

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

One thing occurs to me: For newly hatched nymphs--will they even be able, or be prone to cannibalizing? I'd hate to buy an ooth, assume they will cannibalize, and then it turns out they don't or can't and they all starve.

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

Good point. I might get an ooth sometime late next month, after we move. I'd probably let them cannibalize on each other for awhile to get the numbers down until they get to a more manageable population, and size. Or is that frowned on in this hobby? I know for T's it can be. >_>

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

Not helpful for me, but helpful for a few other states: http://www.herper.com/insects/namantids.html I like the look of the Chinese mantis a lot better---I might check with the Department of Agriculture to see.

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

I'll look into it a bit more and see. My thing is, I might want to release some of them into the wild as they grow up and I don't want to release non-established species. If Europeans are here, then that's what I'll go with. I like the look of the Chinese mantids better, but if we aren't sure...

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

Alright. That at least gives me something to go on, I wasn't even really sure where to look, lol. I'm somewhat surprised we don't have any "truly native" species, but that happens. It's of course also possible the native species were wiped out by the Chinese/European mantids and we never knew...

How to find out what mantids are native to my area/

I live in west Michigan, and I'd like to keep local, native mantids. I don't really intend on going out and just catching them, but I'm having a hard time find what species are native to this area. And, just to make things easier, for my purposes, established foreign species count as 'native'...

Found an interesting site, including purchase of Chinese mantids. Thought I'd share.

http://www.biconet.com/biocontrol/mantis.html Looks like good prices. Someone on Arachnoboards posted it as a place to get isopods. Thought it might be helpful here as well. :P

    Blatta Lateralis

For what it's worth--as a person who doesn't have mantids, but rather, tarantulas---with lateralis you have no worry of them burrowing. They don't burrow, at least not in my T cages. They can climb, but aren't great at it (no plastic/glass really), so they should be ideal for your mantids.

    Hello! Just here to learn

I don't intend on having mantids, mainly since I loooove my tarantulas, and my wife-to-be had to have some sort of limit. Plus, I understand mantids usually only live a season, and I like things to last a little longer. Anyway, I'm just here to browse and learn about mantids! :D
