What does it mean when they are in this pose?

Thanks for the great responses everyone I've learned a great deal :D watching them since they hatched has taught me a lot about nature vs nurture. I find it interesting to see what type of habits they develop in their man made habitat as they grow. Hope they keep growing :)

What does it mean when they are in this pose?

I'm trying to learn the behaviors of my chinese mantids and they seem to get into this pose every once in a while and I can't figure out what the purpose of it is. At first I would guess they are getting ready to molt but this guy has molted recently. And I'm quite sure it isn't in attack mode...

    Avoiding mold

I am planning to put an ootheca in a 10 gallon tank, which I really don't want to clean often. Besides using paper towels as a substrate, what is a good substrate or technique to use to avoid the mold that will start to build when the flies start dropping. I am basically trying to find a way to...

    Not finishing their meals

haha i think that may be the reason. I recently changed from coconut fiber to a napkin substrate and from fear of building up mold to quickly I haven't been spraying every other day...I feel like i just sent my questions to the people at myth busters haha thanks for the responses everyone i'll...

    Not finishing their meals

they are tenodera aridifolia sinensis to me, i feel like if i only put a few in they won't be eating as much as they need to because the flies are more spread out and from what I have noticed is that they don't chase there prey. so that lowers their chances of eating even more. but then again i...

    Not finishing their meals

what would be a good way of feeding them? I usually just put the culture over the opening of the cage and tap it a couple times and leave it for a while and then do it again when it seems like there are only a few left (usually like 15-20) I have about 13 nymphs, L2s on the verge of L3, in one...

    Not finishing their meals

I have noticed multiple of my mantises don't finish their meals(hydei flies). They just nibble them for a couple minutes, after catching them, and just drop them without finishing them. The flies still look whole, as if they just dropped dead. Is there something wrong with the flies or is this...

    Ghozt

Dope (mantid) dealer, great guy, great service. He is reliable and trustworthy. I ordered two Tenodera Aridifolia ooths from him and he didn't ship it until the weather was all good. It came faster than I expected too. One ooth just hatched the other day and I am one happy camper :lol...

    what do...

i believe mels are a little bit smaller than hydei but usually nymphs start off with mels or hydei then work their way up to house flies and anything the size of or smaller than the mantis, sometimes mantises are able to eat things that are even bigger than themselves!

For shizzle. Thanks Pete. Question, do you guys clean your terrariums regularly? I currently have one 10 gallon terrarium and I'm gonna hatch my ooth in there and I was thinking that it is going to be pretty difficult to clean if I have a hundreds of little guys/gals running around. 2nd...

    Greetings from San Francisco

Thank you all. I feel very comfortable here, which is good because I plan on being here a while haha. But regarding the humidity issue. I currently have Eco Earth coconut fiber as a substrate, I bought it because it came as a 3pack for a pretty good price. The reason I choose that one was...

    Greetings from San Francisco

I was thinking the heater would help keep the humidity up because my place is usually below room temperature. I'm no scientist but I think its pretty hard to keep something warm and damp without a heat source. I'm originally from the East Bay and its pretty warm out there consistently but now...

Yo, Whats up everyone! I am new to this forum and new to the world of the preying mantis. I am looking forward to starting off straight with the ooth so I can see the full cycle of the mantis. I'm looking to receive the Tenodera Aridifolia species. I heard they are a little hard to raise as...
