    Shipping mantises and ooths

I ship larger mantids in the containers they live in (32 oz deli or 50 dram vial). These containers have a strip of screen taped up one side for perching. When I ship, I add a piece of paper towel folded accordion/zig-zag like which runs top to bottom. I feel this adds a buffer in case the...

    Mantid cleans rear

This Asian Giant female laid an ooth. Later that day, I see her bent over chewing on her rear. She had reached down, grabbed her abdomen and pulled it to her mouth. I assume she was removing some foam from ooth laying. She pulled her head up when I went to take the picture. Reminded me of...

    Yen Saw - (US)

Another transaction with Yen - great service, packing, and mantids as usual. Even a freebie couple of orchid males to match up with the female he sent. :)

    Sextaplegic Mantis

This mantis molted once while deformed. My daughter continued to feed him for awhile and then lost interest and he died from neglect.

    mice as PETS

We had a pet rat for awhile as a kid. Very calm and handleable. You won't get that from a mouse.

    African Budwing Mating Sequence

She is going on the all-you-can eat plan now. She matured 2 weeks or so before the males and I was afraid she would drop an infertile ooth before the males were ready if I fed her too much. I have one more female at the sub adult stage. The two older females have each laid 8 ooths and are...

    Chinese ooth incubation period

Reason I ask is that you observed an ooth hatch in the wild here and we haven't had 4-6 weeks of warm weather -> that ooth progressed toward hatching from fall to winter. I wild collected this last fall. I guess I'll see how soon it hatches now that it is inside.

    Chinese ooth incubation period

How long will a chinese mantid ooth kept at about 50F all winter and brought to room temperature take to hatch (as opposed to one laid and kept at room temp)? Or is there any difference? I'm thinking perhaps the eggs/larva progress during the winter and then finish up as the weather warms.

    My Tarantula collection

Nice looking group of Ts. Is your G. aureostriata easy going like mine?

    African Budwing Mating Sequence

I placed the female up on a high surface and fed her a roach. I then introduced the male on his lid right behind her. He focused on her and wiggled his antenna to catch her drift. After about 20 minutes, he hopped on. It took him about another 20 minutes to get his abdomen in motion and make...

Nah... she's looking at me and the camera. I put them in a 10g overnight and they were separated and male was fine this AM.

    Advice sought with Photographic bias.

Post works fine for mantids unless the postal service errs (at least in the US). You may want to check out Martin French of Bugzuk.com. He has many species available and can give you his experience with Royal Mail.

    jplelito (Jon Lelito)

I trade an ooth to Jon for some S. pretiosa nymphs. Mantids arrived on time, packed well, and were nice healthy looking specimens. Thanks Jon
